Attracting Businesses to our Neighborhood

"Also, the salon that use to be next to Isabels..."East 42nd St Salon" was a
great little spot, and it moved over to Nicollet last year. I don't know the
specifics as to why, but my guess would be that they needed more space, as
their new location is much larger in square feet. I think that this speaks to
the amount of business they had and the desire of people in our area to support
a business like this. I know I did!!"
Heidi's absolutely right about East 42nd St Salon! I have been a loyal
customer of it & owner Teresa Johnson since I moved to SENA in 1999. I used to
love that I could ride my bike up 42nd to get my haircuts! I agree that
Teresa's desire to expand her business is what forced her to move. I have
followed her & the salon to Nicollet and would urge anyone who's looking for a
new hair stylist or other salon service to check it out; Teresa has greatly
expanded the salon's offerings - and you can book your appt ON-LINE!
http://e42salon.com/ I was last in for a cut & color in late Dec and asked
Teresa if she's feeling the effects of the economy. She said she is - so
please do what you can to help her & other local businesses out during these
rough times!

Well, this is almost certainly too late, but I think the bike path would be
more scenic running along the north side of Hiawatha Golf Course, along 43rd
Street. I'll leave the details to the engineers and planners, but get south
before Cedar Ave, cross Cedar at 43rd Street ( I see a tunnel!), continue all
the way down 43rd Street to Nokomis Ave, then jog north for a block and
reconnect with the existing plan at 42nd Street. 43rd Street has plenty of
room on the south side of the road to build a nice bike lane....
Or better yet, cross Cedar at 43rd Street, continue all the way down 43rd
Street and jog north on 28th Ave to 42nd Street, and which would direct a lot
of bike traffic by the commercial corner at 28th Ave and 42nd Street. Bakers
Wife and coffee for morning riders, Busters and beer for evening riders! This
could spur new development at this corner and could entice the golf course to
do some aestetic improvement to their northern border.
Running along 43rd would provide great views of the norther portions of the
golf course and the new rain gardens at 21st Ave and 43rd Street, plus would
allow bikers to pull off at Lake Hiawatha Park or continue down to the Parkway.

My wife and I are members of Fresh Earth Farms CSA in Afton.
http://home.earthlink.net/~freshearthfarms/
This is our third different CSA but we plan on choosing them again. We chose
them because they are as close to our house in Minneapolis and I could find and
I met the owner and I really liked his farming methods. Being so close to our
house (relatively speaking) means that our food doesn't have to travel so far
to get to our plates but also i didn't have to drive too far (again, relatively
speaking) when I wanted to volunteer on the farm. Anyway, they drop off at
Seward Co-op.
I would say that you can't go too wrong when you choose a CSA. I found each
CSA that we have used to have amazing produce.

What are your ideas for the old ACE space?
From:

I've worked at 3 different food co-ops over the years and currently work at
Seward. There are lots of great resources for starting food co-ops at these
websites:
www.ncga.coop - National Co-op Grocers Assoc
www.ncba.coop - National Co-op Business Assoc.
www.ica.coop - International Co-op Alliance
A co-op in SENA would be wonderful, but I think we would need some major
financial backing. The folks in Long Lake just started up a co-op called
Harvest Moon. They may have some info for you. Their website is
www.harvestmoon.coop I think they have something like 475 members and they
need to raise something like $1.9 million to get the store up and running. I
know that Seward Co-op members raised $1.46 million for the new building
that opens tomorrow. So I think the money is the biggest challenge.

Last summer we joined Featherstone Farms CSA. They have a variety of drop
points - last summer we did French Meadow (closer to the person we were sharing
with); this year we'll pick up at Seward. It's $600 for a large share. We were
very happy with them last year!

fyi,
I used to live by Hampden Park coop, and its a good example of a small co-op
that doesn't have a parking lot. Not sure how the parking laws work in St.
Paul compared to Mpls, but I imagine a local coop that is mostly foot
traffic from the surrounding neighborhood and maybe not much car traffic
needed...

FYI-- The full 'Strib article names the landlord as Joe Bisanz of VIP
Properties.
I eagerly devoured Scandia's rosettes and krumkake for the first time this
holiday season! While they weren't precisely the same as the grannies from my
childhood church made, Scandia's recipes were still yummy and delightfully
nostalgic.

We did our first CSA last year with Big River Farms in Marine on St. Croix,
part of the Minnesota Food Association - www.mnfoodassociation.org. We
signed up late and had to pick up at the Northeast Co-op on Central Avenue,
a wonderful place but a long walk from here ;) They drop off at the Seward
Co-op as well, and are listed on their site.

That's great to know. I've had a hard time finding a CSA that lists truly
local drop off-locations. Some are just to the north:
http://tinyurl.com/8ub5k6
If others on the forum belong to a CSA, please share the name, price, web
address and your pick up location. I think we are ready to join our first
CSA.
One idea - I wonder if the new owner of Dokkens might be open to serving as
a drop off location, perhaps sell some CSA produce too (if you can do that).
I'd certainly buy a lot more milk there.

Hello All:
This is a great list.? I've been on Mpls/Issues forever and learned
much more about my neighbors and issues close to home in the last few weeks
since I've been on here.
My name is Anthony Thompson.? My wife Jennifer and I (and our two pups)
have lived in Standish-Ericsson for almost five years now just off
Cedar over by Sibley Park.? I grew up in the area, went to Saint
Helena, and I worked behind the counter at my family's pharmacy on 38th
Street (the Nile) through high school and college until it closed.
To address a previous post on local owned pharmacies...I'd be surprised to see
them make a comeback.
I now have my law office in the same building, right at 38th Street and 23rd
Avenue.? (all of a five-block commute)
I love it here in Standish-Ericsson.? Its easy to downtown or just about
anywhere in the cities from such a great
central location.? Great nearby spots like Chris & Rob's (cant get
over calling it Joey D's), Baker's Wife, and Colossal Cafe.
Having worked on and been on/around 38th Street for my whole life, it
has been interesting watching it slowly change.? I hope it continues.
I thought Lucuma was great while it lasted and hope something can be figured
out for 42nd/Cedar Ave.
I hope to get more involved in SENA too.
Best of luck to everyone in the new year!

If anyone is interested, Foxtail Farm delivers to our house on the 42xx block
of 24th Ave. We usually have enough boxes filling our porch, but I know they'd
be happy to deliver to another location nearby. They're willing to bring a
single box for more money, two for less, and three for a discount. We love
their wide variety of veggies and smart newsletters.
To follow up on my previous email about making your own yogurt--the starters
are made by Yogourmet and come in little boxes you can find in the refrigerator
at the coop. All you need are glass jars, homogenized milk, and an oven that
can warm at 110 degrees. (If you like kefir, the kitchen counter is warm
enough.)
I, too, would throw my hat into the ring for a local coop, even a very small
one. Our home was a drop-off site for a food-buying group for years; we just
had to stop because United Food raised its food prices and gas surcharge so
high. But a larger food buying group would be a good place to begin if we're
interested in starting a coop.
Happy new year to all!

I agree .... at this stage in a severe economic depression I would think a

The king of Norway and the crown prince of Sweden dined on pastries from the
Scandia Bake Shop when they came to Minnesota. Every December hundreds of
customers have paraded in to buy loaves of julekaka (pronounced yul-uh-kaka),
the Norwegian Christmas bread, filled with candied fruit and raisins and spiced
with cardamom.
The future may not be so sweet, however.
The bakery, at 5011 34th Av. S. in Minneapolis, is set to close its doors at
noon on Saturday after the landlord declined to extend the lease. An attorney
for the landlord said the shop has been chronically late in paying its rent.
Local supporters are trying to rally support for the shop, either to keep it
open or find another place to reopen it.
Attracting Businesses to our Neighborhood

Hello, I am a new resident here, and I intend to join a council meeting very
soon.
I have a few questions about the two street corners referenced above:
When was Lucuma, the locale between Cedar Inn and Isabel's, in business? Any
chance of the previous owner taking on another project?
What business is moving into the space adjacent to Chris and Rob's?
Would the old Ace residence work for a coffee shop/music venue (of the more
folk variety if noise is an issue)?
thanks,
Todd

Attracting Businesses to our Neighborhood

Hi All,
It might be difficult to address all of the questions and implications of
this issue in the forum. For those of you who are interested in working on
this issue, I encourage you to attend a SENA board meeting and/or join one
of the committees addressing these concerns. This is where the best work on
theses issues happens. It is a great way to make a real difference. To
find out meeting times and a group that fits your interest, call the SENA
office at 612-721-1601.
There are two big picture issues I do want to address:
First, SENA does work with business to improve exteriors for the benefit of
the neighborhood. For example, last year SENA received a city grant along
with other neighborhoods and has been working to make improvements to
commercial sites along the Hiawatha corridor. In this grant project (as
with most) SENA's investment requires a match by the business owners. SENA
had done similar projects over the years, including on the 42/Cedar
intersection. An investment by the business owner is always a requirement
for SENA participation.
Second, I believe the real way to solve the 42nd/Cedar intersection issue is
to a attract business owner(s) to invest in and take "ownership" for the way
the building and the corner looks. The restaurateurs that I have met with
seem to have the vision to see beyond a sad looking store front. It is the
potential return on investment they are seeking.
In the meantime, as neighbors and residents we will have to do what we can
to keep these corners tidy (report graffiti, pick up trash, etc). One idea
that came up earlier this year on the forum was tulip/spring flower
campaign. I wonder if that corner wouldn't be vastly improved by replacing
the weeds with flowers/perennials. The nice ladies that own "Diva Rags"
have offered to plant and maintain such a garden. Maybe we should pull
together a spring volunteer day to clean-up what we can and help them plant
some flowers.
Regards, Lea

Lea,
Do you think that SENA could be instrumental in at least beginning this
process? It would probablycreate an opportunity to
demonstrateanotherwonderful project SENA made possible. If we could do
something to even give the outside a little face-lift it might actually
attract tennants for the two vacant spaces.

Hi Kyle, All good ideas. I couldn't agree more.
One piece of information that might broaden the conversation: The buidling
that SENA is now in, is owned by a landlord. So, for a restaurant to come
in and make it work, they would be investing a heavy sum of capital
improvements into someone else's property. The restrauntuers I've talked to
have thrown out number in the $50K to $100K range for venting, plumbing,
etc. So, it isn't just paint. This make it unlikely that folks that own
their own space (like Bess at Colossal Caf or Michael at Citizen's Cafe)
would give up space they currently own and have already improved, to
reinvest in rental space.
As I review my response, I realize this sounds like a real downer. This is
not my intention, however, I do want to bring some information to all this
great enthusiasm to help find solutions to these very real challenges.
We've got a great resource just in the amount of citizen engagement and
passion on these issues. I hope we can take it to the next level and make
something happen.
The reality is you are absolutely right. A great anchor tenant on our
42/cedar western entrance would make such a difference to the value and
livability of the neighborhood (I think you said an Al Vento. Yes!
Wouldn't
that be lovely!) on that corner, so if you have connections, or think you
can interest someone in moving into the neighborhood, start the
conversation!
Regards and Happy New Year to all. Lea

Here are my suggestions, with apologies to those adversely affected. Its
just my thoughts, and makes some assumptions for parking, available monies,
tenants, city involvement etc. My point is that a group of motivated
neighbors could add a lot of free labor to make the area more attractive to
a business.
At the intersection of Cedar and 42nd. This is the western gateway to the
neighborhood. Since you rarely get a second chance to make a good
impression, Id concentrate on this intersection.
* Id think about some larger SENA signage both at the office and on the
street / sidewalk area. Let people make no mistake that they are entering
the neighborhood. It seems our placement of SENA ID signs is haphazard.
*Clean-up the Country Boy. Frankly, its not very welcoming and doesnt seem
to the fit the demographics of our neighborhood. (Yes, its not our
neighborhood but the location is important to SENA.) *Same for the old
flooring space just to the south. Maybe another medical office to
compliment the dentist?
*Isabels old location needs a tenant as soon as possible. Its like a giant
sign saying no business can be had here. My preference is a sit down
restaurant ala Al Vento - I know in the past there was talk of Isabels
expanding into the adjacent space to the east. Maybe Colossal to the
space? Have the neighborhood help with the moving and the remodel, like
when we moved the SENA office.
*Losing Re-Gifts really hurt. A store like that attracted people from all
over the Cities..
At the intersections of 42nd and 28th. More of a northern gateway to the
lake and the creek.
*ACE location - Some sort of outdoors store would be nice. Maybe a bike
store? A golf store? Something that could take advantage of the lake, the
golf course and the creek.
*A once-over on the outside of Dokkens and Flagg Food would be appreciated.
They just dont seem welcoming. BTW Ive been to Flagg Food just once - they
said I couldnt use my debit card for purchases less than $5. Havent been
back since..
*The old bookstore space between the Bakers Wife and the barbershop seems
quite nice. Maybe we could convince that artist on Cedar in the Corcoran
neighborhood, or HR Block, to relocate! As an aside, we missed an
opportunity with that new Subway on Cedar.
*Some signage pointing to the lake and creek? Something showing that they
are important to the neighborhood? I feel like our neighborhood proximity
to these features should be exploited.
For the Lake and the Creek
* The public areas of Lake Hiawatha Park could use a onceover. Paint,
straightening up the beach area etc. I think that theres a horseshoe pit, I
might make that my spring project with or without city guidance!
* Better more efficient lighting and signage at the parkway crosswalk on
28th.
There should be some ability for the neighborhood / SENA to perhaps
negotiate with the landlords for small improvements, such as landscaping,
painting, awnings etc? Perhaps this is a better option once a tenant is
IDd, but right now these intersections look a little blighted, and we really
should take better advantage of our location by the lake and the creek
