The Palestinian community in Brighton together with Brighton and Hove
Palestine Solidarity Campaign are organising a rally and march in
Brighton this Sunday.
Assemble Sunday January 11th 1pm Palmeira Square
Route for the march is along Western Road to Churchill Square then down
North Street to the Palace Pier
After the excellent turn out for last Saturday's demonstration we must
build public support for the Gazans who have been subjected by Israel to
the most appalling brutality.
Many of the Palestinians in Brighton have relatives in Gaza and the
occupied West Bank and it is vital that we show our solidarity with them
and support them in this traumatic time.
Please make every effort to come.

Five reasons to spend in the local community
1. You’ll be protecting the unique character and diversity of Brighton &
Hove’s vibrant shopping districts.
2. The money you spend in the area supports local jobs and wages and
improves the well-being of your community.
3. You become part of a chain of people making local decisions affecting
local people.
4. Thanks to your custom, local businesses are more likely to survive,
succeed and stay local.
5. Local businesses are more likely to be environmentally sustainable,
especially those with local supply chains.

Fwd: Brighton Demo and latest from Genocide in Gaza - and a definite local issue!
From:
VAL CANE

Hi
I do hope I don't get moderated for trying to suggest that Gaza is a local
issue as I propose to give a few reasons.
I can understand (and share, in fact) frustration at the way in which Tony
expresses himself on occasion but this doesn't invalidate his arguments.
The title to this post is the first reason why it is arguably a local issue.
VERY MANY people felt strongly enough to meet and march on Saturday. It was a
very well-attended, successful occasion.
The Palestinian and indeed wider Arab community in B and H undoubtedly feel
even more distressed than I do about what's happening in Gaza - and that's bad
enough. What they must be feeling I can barely imagine.
There are probably plenty of Jewish people in B and H who would like to
exercise their right to go and live in Israel - seems like a good idea to
me,when viewed from the perspective of a failing, hypocritical regime here -
but would not even consider it because of the way the Israeli government are
behaving at present.
Finally, I was appalled at the waste of our council tax money manifesting
itself by at least ten (I wish I'd been counting, probably a lot more)
videocameras being used by the Old Bill to film us on the march. OK, you expect
this, especially in the light of the 'war on terror' ;(as futile as the war on
drugs in my view, until the basic reasons for the terror are addressed - but
that's another story) but surely overkill at this level?
So - for all the above reasons,I really feel certain that this is a local
issue.
ANOTHER LOCAL ISSUE - B and H COUNCILS USE OF OUR MONEY.
I have been trying, with little success, to interest people in Joerg Thieme's
FOI petition on use of our money to defend the indefensible, ie. the fiasco
about the transgendered teacher Natasha Thoday, the way the Council treated her
and their subsequent attempts to justify this. So far it has little support.
I've tried to encourage him to get in touch with the Forum again - if he
doesn't, and you're as bad at deleting as I am, you will find the link to the
website on his post dated 17 Dec.
For the record, I am a committed member of the NUT, the union Natasha is
seriously slagging off on her blog. She has a couple of small factual errors
that I tried to correct, but it wouldn't accept it. But I recommend it, it
makes very interesting reading from the perspective of a so-called inclusive
profession, union and town.
However, like Tony (it seems) I am a believer in the 'Power corrupts'
philosophy. I have no illusions that unions make bad mistakes/decisions at
times, and some paid officers leave a lot to be desired......I know this from
personal experience!

Tom,
I'm confused here, not getting the whole picture. What has been banned, and
why? And by whom?
Although Gaza is not local to Brighton & Hove, it has important local
implications. When demos take place here, they are themselves local issues and
should be well covered on a local E-Democracy forum such as this. There is the
additional local dimension of the factory in Home Farm Road, Brighton that is
associated with the manufacture of components used for the bombing of Gaza.
On a bus in Hove yesterday I picked up the Metro newspaper and read "HAMAS
yesterday warned ... that Jewish children everywhere were now 'legitimate
targets' ... ". It quoted a Hamas commander as saying "The Zionists have
legitimised the killing of their children by killing our children. They have
legitimised the killing of their people all over the world by killing our
people." That threat, although not unique to Brighton & Hove, clearly includes
it.
It feels like an important local issue to me, that children of Brighton &
Hove with Jewish connections, or even adults, are under threat of being made
targets for killing.
If an attempted post to this forum by a member had been banned for a
legitimate reason, wouldn't the person doing the banning have posted a brief
statement of the date and nature of the attempted posting, and which rule it
infringed, and under which rule it was banned?
Please can we have some clarity and openness on these matters?

Credit crunch sees Brighton and Hove charity double print run of guide to local services
From:
Colin Chalmers
Date:
Jan 06 12:18 UTC
Short link
Brighton and Hove charity Community Base has doubled the print run of its
poster guide to local services to 20,000 in anticipation of greater demand for
community services as a result of the credit crunch.
Community Base's 2009 guide to community services in Brighton and Hove is
published this week. The guide lists vital community services across the city,
from charities giving advice on housing and debt to helplines offering
emotional support to people in crisis.
Colin Chalmers, Community Base director, says
"As the credit crunch bites a lot of people are going to need advice on
employment, money, mental health for the first time. If you lose your job, get
into money trouble or find yourself facing some other kind of crisis it can be
really difficult knowing who to turn to for help. Our guide is there to help
local people find the help they need when they need it."
"Our guide lists council and government agencies offering local services and
benefits - but we also list community groups offering the independent advice
people often need when dealing with these agencies.
"It's often those people most in need that find it most difficult to get
independent help and support when dealing with bureaucracies and big companies.
As a local charity we see our role as helping people get a fair deal whatever
their background or situation. "
* The 2009 Community Base poster guide lists all groups at Community Base as
well as other community services in Brighton and Hove.
* The guide is available free from Community Base's reception at 113 Queens
Road, Brighton Monday-Friday 8.30am-4.30pm, by phoning (01273) 234002 or by
emailing <email obscured>. If you are able to help distribute the
guide through mailing lists you have access to please get in touch.
* The Information in the poster guide is based on that in Brighton and Hove
service search which you can find at www.communitybase.org/servicesearch.
* The Community Base guide is available in 12 languages other than English from
www.communitybase.org or Community Base's reception
* Community Base owns a seven floor building in central Brighton providing a
home to 28 not-for-profit, non-governmental community organisations.

As I understand the process, Starbucks are following the correct procedure.
An appeal against an enforcement order is made to the Secretary of State,
through the Planning Inspectorate in Bristol.
The Inspectorate can deal with appeals in one of three ways:-
. The Local Planning Authority and the appellant can make written
statements; or . A public local inquiry can be held; or . A hearing can be
held (less formal than a full inquiry).
If the Local Planning Authority has served an enforcement notice and there
is a valid appeal against it, they will write to everyone who lives in
nearby property and others who they think are affected, to tell them about
the appeal. The Local Planning Authority should also write to anyone who has
already written to them about the site.
There is a Guide to public participation in the Enforcement Appeal process
on the Planning Inspectorate's website:-
