Grand Rapids Area Issues Forum Charter

This forum is a place to discuss local, public issues and share community announcements using real names with civility. Everyone with an interest in seeing the communities of the Grand Rapids Area thrive is welcome to be a member. The goal of the Grand Rapids Area Issues Forum is to provide a neutral, non-threatening place to voice opinions and share our collective wisdom about the many issues faced by our interconnected communities. By increasing civic participation and encouraging more input into solutions to area problems, the Grand Rapids Area forum strives to increase communication between community members and influence political agendas locally and on a broader scale.

Goals

The goals of Grand Rapids Area Issues Forum are:

  • To build community and understanding between members across imposed or perceived barriers.
  • To open discussion about local issues not being addressed adequately in other political or public venues.
  • To encourage dialogue and the sharing of knowledge and experience among area residents that might otherwise not take place because of fear of speaking in public, travel expense, time availability or other restrictions.
  • To influence policy and agenda setting on a variety of levels by encouraging participation from elected officials.
  • To provide a billboard for area events.

Typical Topics

Topics that you might find here to discuss include:

  • A community issue that needs to be addressed (such as; How can we organize a community watch program to provide a greater sense of security in our neighborhood?)
  • Responses to political decisions affecting those invested in the Grand Rapids area.
  • An explanation of a local issue designed to encourage discussion and a link to a related article or website intended to broaden members' perspectives.
  • An invitation to upcoming event; or the posting of a timely obituary.
  • Video or photo of a local event or pertinent speaker with an explanation designed to invite discussion and other perspectives.

Participation Rules

By taking part in this forum, you accept the full rules of the forum.

Highlighted rules:

  • Be civil. (Remember that the purpose of the forum generally is to encourage discussion.)
  • No attacks or threats. (Keep comments/posts focused on issues rather than on the person or people who present conflicting ideas.)
  • Avoid false rumors. (Much of our inability to come together over issues is founded in rumor and misinformation. If you don't know for sure, ask a question for confirmation or qualify 'what you heard' rather than stating it as fact.
  • Keep topics within forum purpose. (offer links to tangential or related issues.)
