The Framingham Amateur Radio Association (FARA) has been in Framingham
since its founding in 1933. For the past 38 years or so, we have been
fortunate to have cost-free Town spaces in the old Danforth Building
downtown. Last year, all tenants were evicted because the Town could no
longer maintain the ancient heating system in the building. FARA is the
only tenant that has NOT been able to find a new home in Framingham.
The others were able to buy or rent space. We cannot do that. The only
fundraising event we have is our annual radio flea market at Keefe Tech
each April. That money is used for maintaining the radio club, but
about half of it is used to award several college scholarships to
deserving young people each year. We have the capability of providing
emergency radio communications by keeping a VHF radio repeater on one of
the towers at the MEMA bunker on Rt. 9. We have a weekly radio net to
stay sharp and test our equipment. We provide radio support each year
to the Boston Marathon, as well as various walkathons and bikeathons for
charities such as the March of Dimes. We have given a presentation to
the Board of Selectmen, and talked to many groups in town, without
success. We are looking for a small, cost-free space where we can meet
and operate our radios, communicating with other ham radio operators
all over the world. Our most active time is on Saturday mornings.
Everyone is welcome at our monthly meetings, held on the first Thursday
of each month at the Framingham Police Station training room, at 7:30
pm. We usually have an interesting speaker.
Sumner Weisman,
FARA Director
