Streetcar Meeting? From: Andrew Miller Date: May 05 16:43 UTC Short link
Yeah, I know that they can be carted on streetcars if the city makes room for that on the streetcars it purchases. Personally I'm not sure that they will (or should) given the nature of this small scale project at this time but I would hope that would be a consideration in the future. This is a small steps solution IMO. You're the second person to say that these streetcars are built in such a way that the tracks won't eat skinny bike wheels. I still can't find anything showing how that works; does anyone have a link to a graphic or description? I've ridden in several cities with streetcars where this isn't the case and it is treacherous (but obviously not impossible). Again, I'm for the streetcars but I do still have questions. Thanks! Streetcars and bikes are compatible - Bikes can be carted on streetcars for use at the end destination. The rails do not eat up wheels -- cities like Portland and Tampa that have new systems are proof of that. The rails do not protrude above the street and make it difficult for bikers, strollers or wheelchairs either. And streetcars could even take cars off the road --fifty people can easily fit in one streetcar -- think how much easier it would be to bike if fifty less cars were on the road. And streetcar drivers probably would be more aware and courteous of cyclists than some drivers are. -- Kathleen Murphy MurphyEpson 151 E.
