How Minneapolis compares with suburbs, from Census

There's an interesting Metropolitan Council report that summarizes
interim U.S. Census data on central cities and developed or
developing suburbs, to 2007. I was shocked to see the high percentage
of households in Minneapolis that are formed of people living alone,
and how precipitously the percentage of owner-occupied homes has
fallen in our city, even since the 2000 Census. How low the average
household income is in the city, and how few children under 18 there
are here. Etc.
It's easy to read, and has a tiny bit of explanation for the
disparities and trends. A preamble to what we'll find in 2010's
Census.'

*Starbucks Legal Troubles Deepen as Union Files Charges with National
Labor Relations Board on nearly 30 Rights Violations*
/Twin Cities Baristas to Illustrate Impact of Union-busting with Big
Performance Review of Starbucks Management/
Minneapolis On the heels of a landmark decision finding Starbucks guilty
of almost 30 labor violations in New York City, the IWW Starbucks Workers
Union has slapped the embattled coffee giant with new charges of nearly
30 additional counts of illegal union-busting in Minneapolis/St. Paul.
The union alleges that Starbucks broke federal law repeatedly by
interrogating workers about union sympathies, instructing supervisors to
spy on the union, and disciplining workers for participating in the
union. Union baristas plan to deliver a six-month Performance Review of
Starbucks to regional management to illustrate their disgust.
Union barista Erik Forman said, After the guilty verdict in New York
City and settlements in the Twin Cities and Grand Rapids, we had hoped
that Starbucks would have learned its lesson, but unfortunately, the
company has chosen to continue the pattern of illegal union-busting they
have established across the US. We will not stand for this, Starbucks
must respect our right to organize.
In late December, a federal ruling against Starbucks concluded a
two-year legal battle between Starbucks and baristas represented by the
Industrial Workers of the World labor union in New York City, ordering
the reinstatement of three baristas fired for union activity. The ruling
parallels recent events in Grand Rapid, MI and the Twin Cities where
Starbucks settled two similar Unfair Labor Practice charges.
Background
Since the launch of the IWW campaign at Starbucks on May 17, 2004, the
company has been cited multiple times for illegal union-busting by the
National Labor Relations Board. The company settled two complaints
against it and was recently found guilty by a federal judge in New York
of nearly 30 rights violations. Starbucks large anti-union operation
is carried out in conjunction with the Akin Gump law firm and the Edelman
public relations firm.
.
The IWW Starbucks Workers Union is a grassroots organization of over 200
current and former employees at the world's largest coffee chain united
for secure work hours and a living wage. The union has members
throughout the United States fighting for systemic change at the company
and remedying individual grievances with management. The SWU has been
especially active in New York City, Chicago, Grand Rapids, and
Minneapolis.

The January issue cover photo is of the destruction of the Gustavus Adolphus
building with this short remembrance:
The Gustavus Adolphus building on Lake Street is finally gone. When it was
first built, just after the turn of the last century, it was a magnificent
structure with a full kitchen and ballroom and theater on the second floor.
It was the center of Swedish culture for South Minneapolis, like Dania Hall
on Cedar Avenue was a center for Danish activities. Wedding receptions,
anniversaries and cultural pageants found a familiar and glorious setting in
both buildings. Like Dania Hall, a fire destroyed it. Some mourned the loss.
All that history reduced to ashes. But the real loss, of course, are the
Scandanavian cultural traditions that have all become Americanized.
Fortunately, for those who need a nostalgic remembrance and a taste of
Scandinavia, Ingebretson's is just across the street with pickled herring,
lefse and wonderful children's books.

a history lesson is in order.

BOOKS | "Skirmish": Bitterly funny poetry from Dobby Gibson
http://tcdailyplanet.net/node/19370
by Jay Gabler, TC Daily Planet
One reason I found Minneapolis poet Dobby Gibson’s new collection,
"Skirmish," so enjoyable is that his combination of mordant wit and
bittersweet longing so recalls the lyrics of my favorite songwriter,
Bob Dylan. When people refer to lyrics as “Dylanesque,” they’re
usually referring to enigmatic images and dense layers of allusion,
but this is also the guy who wrote “Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream” (“The
waitress he was handsome / He wore a powder blue cape / I ordered
some suzette, I said / ‘Could you please make that crepe?’”) and “Po’
Boy” (“Poor boy, in the hotel called Palace of Gloom / Calls down to
room service, says ‘Send up a room’”).

bordering on maniacal pride, in claiming that their European

these immigrants' boots were still wet from the spray of the Atlantic

European immigrants rapidly mastered English in a sink-or-swim
environment that demanded that they leave their mother tongues

Latin American immigrants do the same and learn English quickly?"

CENTRAL CORRIDOR: Is It Really Going to Kill MPR?
MPR, in the person of President/CEO Bill Kling is flooding the media
with letters and announcements on the MPR airwaves that the Central
Corridor light rail alignment down Cedar Street in St. Paul is going
to rattle the studio walls and penetrate his soundproofing with
intolerable noise and vibration by its 12-foot proximity to his
headquarters, built and expanded on with several millions of public
dollars.
Now Mr. Kling threatens to sue and/or leave the city if the line stays
on this path has critics up in arms, not the least of which are Met
Council, Ramsey County and St. Paul public officials insisting his
complaint comes too late. His history with public and private
officials hasn't made it easy to accept Kling's assertions that all of
this is based on too little information early on and revealing data as
late as April, 2008, proves his point. But where was he when all the
arguments over alignment and specifications were published and debated
for months on end over a five-year period? Kling says he started then.
Others beg to differ. Will Mr. Kling agree to debate this on a station
other than running lobbying announcements on his own? Stand by. Either
way, TTT will take this on and Bill Kling has been invited to join the
discussion Wednesday.

New book-length manuscript on 2008 Congressional race in 5th district

If you have energy and interest left for politics, you might want to look at a
book-length manuscript which I posted on the internet today titled “Inside an
Independence Party candidate’s campaign for Congress in Minnesota’s 5th
district in 2008.’’ Just finished writing it.
You can find this at http://www.newindependenceparty.org/congress-summary.html.
The manuscript is over 68,000 words in length and has 50 photographs - about
half from the week of the Republican National Convention. I did not win, of
course - got 22,300 votes or 6.92% of the total. But you do get a glimpse of
some elements at work in a campaign such as mine in the historic election year
of 2008. It’s written as an adventure story.
An entire chapter - chapter 10 - is reserved for experiences related to
discussion on this forum, including those last summer that led to the Northside
barbecues.
If you find factual inaccuracies or conceptual errors in the manuscript or have
questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thanks.

"The deficit is so overwhelming that it's hard to even think about
what the other issues would be," said Senator Sandy Pappas (D-St.

legislative session that begins January 6. From higher education to
green jobs to child care to roads and bridges, the deficit looms over
all other issues.
New fees in the era of "No New Taxes"
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/19389
by Jeff Van Wychen, Minnesota 2020
During the era of "no new taxes," Minnesota is primarily addressing
rising budget shortfalls by cutting much-needed aid to local
governments and jacking up regressive fees on Minnesota families.
Relying on these policies alone to resolve the $5.5 billion deficit
would have disastrous repercussions for our state.
FOOD | That Was The Year That Was: Gastronomic Highlights of 2008

by Jeremy Iggers, Secrets of the City
Looking back over 2008, there were a couple of high-profile openings -
Porter & Frye and Barrio, and a few high-profile departures: jP
American Bistro, Babalu, Temple. But it's hard to spot any big trends
on the local dining scene, except for maybe More Sushi: openings in
the past 12 months include Musashi and Seven downtown, Tiger Sushi in
Uptown, and Giapponese in Woodbury. More Vietnamese noodle joints
opened on Eat Street, including Pho Hoa, the Noodle Bowl and Hoanh
Thien Y, but that's not exactly news. Eat Street also got a new
Indonesian restaurant, Bali, at 14th and Nicollet, and a Mexican Deli,
Marissa's, at 28th and Nicollet. My most memorable meals of the past
year were mostly driven by the joy of discovery - terrific Thai
cuisine in the back room of a deli on University Ave; wood-fired pizza
on a farm in Stockholm, Wi., world-class sushi in Woodbury. Herewith,
in no particular order, a few of the highlights of the past 12 months.

Yes, if the sidewalks front commercial or more than 2 unit rental
properties said sidewalks must be cleared within 4 hours of when the
snow stops falling or daylight if the snowfall stopped at night.
And, as Bill Kahn was nice enough to point out, you can't start
removing that snow before 6 a.m. and have to quit removing said snow
by 10 p.m.. Thus our draconian city laws require that even if the
snow stops falling at 10 p.m. you can't touch it until 6 a.m.. In the
real world of snow removal that's insane- the folks in the "plow biz"
have to work long hours to clear sidewalks and parking lots after a
storm and all night shifts are the norm. If the citizens of
Minneapolis really want this ordinance enforced, expect unplowed
sidewalks and parking lots in the morning. In fact, the snow might
never get cleared as snowplowers would probably refuse to work in
Minneapolis if our draconian snow removal restrictions were enforced.
Homeowners get a slight reprieve, but we have but 24 hours to clear
snow before the city inspector shows up and hits us with several
hundred dollars in fines and snow removal fees. Given that it's not
safe to walk in much of Minneapolis so pedestrian traffic is sparse
anyway, it makes little sense to enslave already encumbered
Minneapolis homeowners with yet another dubious civic responsibility.
Meanwhile, the city takes it's sweet time plowing the side streets- I
haven't seen much bare pavement for weeks now.
