Election Experiences
From:

This Election Day was the first on which I volunteered to be a poll
worker -- I usually teach on Tuesdays! I wanted very much to be an
official part, however tiny, of this history-making day. What was
most remarkable to me was the day's calmness. Between 6:30-8:15
a.m., I thought we were going to see a replay of 2004. We had a line
way out the door of our multi-precinct polling place, and everyone
was struggling a bit to make sure that no detail was
overlooked. From 8:15 on, however, there were never more than 10
people in line; most of the day, anyone could walk in and
vote. Early voting, I am sure, is what made the difference. We
expected a lunch hour rush. None came. We expected an end of shift
rush at 3 p.m. -- there was a slight uptick. Most of us wolfed some
food around 4:45 to be ready for the after-work scramble. None happened.
From where I sat, interactions were almost entirely congenial,
especially among all the workers. Everyone was really good about
maintaining a nonpartisan civic atmosphere and trying to make sure
that everyone entitled to vote could do so in the place and through
the method most likely to get their vote counted and counted
properly. There were a few quite young poll workers and one quite
senior citizen. The general efficiency of the operation was
impressive. My one personal triumph of sorts was persuading a roster
judge that a young Asian-American man whose name had been mistakenly
transposed in the signature book was still entitled to vote by
regular, not provisional ballot.
Your word "refreshing," Liz, captures very much how I have been
feeling all week.

I agree, Josh. The public engagement in this election seemed incredibly
energetic this year. I was excited to hear friends claim that, 'the wait
wasn't too bad, only an hour and a half.' In my neighborhood and on campus,
it was refreshing to see and hear so many people feeling empowered by the
civic act of voting. That energy, regardless of candidates and even issues,
is something that gives me optimism in the challenging economic future we
are all up against.

First of all, I just want to say that I enjoyed our discussions about all of
the issues on the ballot in the recent election, and I want to thank everyone
for participating and educating me about these important issues. As a follow
up to these discussions, I'm curious to hear about your experiences surrounding
the election and any final thoughts that you may have.
Did anyone volunteer or participate in going door to door in your communities
in the days leading up to the election? Regardless of who or what you were
promoting, on a personal level what did you think about the experience? I was
excited to see the level of public engagement that seemed to surround this
election, and I think it would be interesting to hear about any individual
experiences that some of you may have had with other citizens in your
neighborhoods. Any other fun or interesting election-related stories to share?
Finally, does anyone have any new information regarding the status of the race
between Stivers and Kilroy? I haven't heard anything for several days, and I'm
wondering where things stand in that congressional race. Although this is not
the venue to advocate for either candidate, I think it would be helpful to
discuss the process by which this race will be resolved, and any updates about
what we can expect in the coming days are greatly appreciated.
Thanks again to you all!

If you have any election day photos you'd like to share - either from your cell
phone with a camera and mobile e-mail, regular e-mail or uploaded via the web,
you can do so using our new and improved photo feature.
Just attach/upload with a post to your forum and we do the rest. Don't worry
about resizing your images - it happens automatically. Don't worry about
filling up someone's mailbox - the images simply reside on the web site.
One clever feature is that images sent to the exact same topic (subject line)
create an automatic slideshow.

Absentee ballots are counted they begin to be counted on election night.
Ballots from overseas military personnel have up to 10 days to be received.
That is what gets people confused. Provisional ballots are considered 10
days afterwards and each is individually determined if it should count or
not.

Absentees are counted just like any ballot. That's a really bad
misconception. Provisional ballots are the ones counted later, but even
those must be verified and counted by ten days after the election.

I was planning on voting absentee for this year's election, but I just heard
from a friend that absentee votes aren't counted until two weeks after the
election. Does anyone know whether this is true? Given the technology of
today, the ability to count (and especially, to publicize) poll results
rapidly, might this have an effect on how a candidate responds to the
initial poll results?

I did the absentee vote this time and plan to do it that way every time.
Besides being able to dodge the lines and other less significant issues, I
liked being able to research candidates and issues at home on my computer as
I voted!! It took me a good 45 minutes or so to vote leisurely at home
since I found myself researching more and more. I normally take much less
time to vote at the booth because I cannot do any research and usually feel
rushed.

I have not tried early voting but I have become a convert to absentee
ballots. It's easy, you can vote from home, and the Board of Elections even
sends you a stamped envelope so you don't have to root around for stamps,
wait in long lines or deal with bad weather.
In the past absentees were the first ballots reported so I know I'm special
there too. I can early vote and vote from home with my absentee. And if I
need some information about yes or no votes on ballot issues, I can always
google for information on the spot.
So yes early voting is an option for some, but please consider voting
absentee - there's no excuse when it is this easy.

I voted absentee because I will be a precinct election official,
a/k/a, poll worker, on November 4. It had the real advantage of
allowing my wife and me to do a little more online research when we
got our ballots and realized there were a few races in which we did
not yet know anything about the candidates.
I should add that I did my three hours' training on Monday, and was
very impressed by the operation (if not by the eccentricities of Ohio
election law). It was a very diverse, very attentive group. The
trainer and his materials were excellent.

Just remember, if you request an absentee ballot and then it is slow to arrive
(or you get antsy), then if you do vote (whether on Election Day or early) then
you will have to vote provisionally.

I'm waiting to vote on Nov. 4. I have not made up my mind completely on some
things and truthfully I guess I'm a traditionalist and like to vote on voting
day. I haven't faced long lines in the past, so I'm going to be daring and try
again. However, it is inspiring and a NICE problem I think to have long lines
vs. empty rooms/buildings, don't you think?

It was extremely quick when I went. I'm running an absentee/early vote

Early Voting

I'm curious, have any of you tried early voting this election cycle? I've
always liked the idea of voting on election day itself, but it seems like there
are a lot of good reasons to vote early, and I'm wondering what your opinions
of this are. Did you have to wait in any sort of a line or was it pretty
quick? How was the turnout when you voted early?

Interesting piece about an issue I've never really thought about before.
