What does everyone /anyone understand about the closing of the Boys and Girls club in Cass Lake as well as the branches in S-Lake, Deer River and Walker (which has been running on a summer programming grant)? Most clubs around the nation have a much larger volunteer staff running programs, whereas in Cass Lake at least the backbone of the staff has been a handful of dedicated people (receiving a wage) who have defied turnover statistics typical of other clubs and provided consistent afterschool attention to kids for a number of years. Hurt feelings and blame aside, and considering its financial straits, what could this retooled oasis of afterschool programming look like as a more sustainable club?
Can somebody fill me in on exactly why the club had to close? I've heard some vague references to financial difficulties/mismanagement, but I have not the faintest idea how much is accurate and how much is speculation.
I've heard conflicting stories from Board members and employees, but one consistent item (coincidentally or not) seems to stem from the exit of the former executive director over a year ago and a subsequent downturn in grant awards.

Thank you, Mike. There are always so many rumors surrounding things like this, I want to get the story straight. Knowing the history of what happened - for better and for worse - is usually instructive in crafting a better future.
i am truly saddened to hear that this program is at risk, or has in fact ended. i haven't worked for the boys and girls clubs, but when at parks and rec in duluth, it was clear how much the opportunity for positive after school and other programs meant to the kids and working families. i was really excited about the possibility of volunteering to teach some beading classes with the local boys and girls club too. i will keep watching for news. thanks for posting about this. peace rey and comet the wonderdog
My understanding is that it will be reopening in the coming months, but I too am interested in knowing more details as I consider putting time in at the club. Hopefully we'll hear some more here as to what's to come and what will change to encourage the clubs' longevity. . .

Kyle wanted me to let you all know that his "thank you" post was in reference to a recommendation to talk to the chairman of the B n G club board who is a neighbor of his. Perhaps he'll have some enlightenment for us all at a later date. . .

We're concerned that the correct information get out, so everyone - if you have a question contact either Jim Chase, Chairman or Katy Preble, Vice-Chair with your questions. There has been enough innuendo and gossip on this issue.

Here's the press release to briefly explain the status of the Club. If you have any further questions, I'd be happy to answer them. Kate Virkus, Vice Chairman Boys and Girls Club of the Leech Lake Area. Press Release August 4, 2009 Dear Club Members, Parents and Supporters The Board of Directors recently made a decision to temporarily close down our Boys & Girls Club of the Leech Lake Area operations. We notified our National Boys & Girls Club Regional Services Director of decision and that it is temporary due to the fact that a number of receivables have not come in as anticipated and it has created a cash flow problem. Our Boys & Girls Club is an organization that is almost 100 percent grant funded and the current recession or economic downturn is making it even harder to find and maintain funding for our programs. For a number of months now the financial health of our organization has been a major concern and this crisis necessitates the need to reassess and restructure our organizationâs operations in order to meet the reality of our main funding sources and the economic factors of today. If you look around the country you will find many businesses and especially nonprofits are struggling to survive during this recession. They are looking at how they do business and the hard decisions that need to be made in order to continue operating. The Boys & Girls Club of the Leech Lake Area has since January 5, 2000 been providing more than 1,200 area youth, both afterschool and during their summer vacation months, with a safe place to learn and grow. We intend to be back up and operating shortly and we apologize to the Club members, their families, and supporters and ask for your continued support and patience during this time. Sincerely, James R. Chase Chairman, Board of Directors Boys & Girls Club of the Leech Lake Area

I've been mulling over the few responses I've received about a picnic over here with Mr. Clift and emailed him the other day to point out the conflict and surrounding issues (including the fact that I will be out of town) and suggesting that a good turnout at the Cultural Connection Picnic in Bemidj could possibly serve the same purpose he was hoping for (meeting with members). Waiting to here exactly what he wants to do, but I'm thinking that may be the way to go. But as always, open to ideas. . .
