Hello, good evening. I am a forty nine , almost, year old traditional anishinaabe mother of a nine year old Leech Lake band member that is the love of my life and we choose as a family to homeschool him and raise him traditionally and the wife to the other love of my life, a traditional elder that is also a Leech Lake band member. I am a registered descendant of an enrolled member of the St. Croix band of Ojibwe in Wisconsin. I have lived here ten and a half years. I am grateful to live here and to be a part of this community and I see beauty in everything. I also am always working on making my life and my families lives and our communities lives better. Thank you for the gift and invite to be a part of this and I know that I will learn a lot. Wishing all of us the love of learning and learning to love, Mike and Patty and Little Tiny
Thanks for the introduction, Patty. If anyone else would like to provide a short intro, just hit "Reply All" and the message will go to the list (that's a standard feature of our forums, if you select to "Reply" to a message it just goes to the person who sent the message; and if you choose "Reply all" it goes to the group - this helps prevent personal messages from accidentally being sent to the forum). It's good to hear that you've already signed up 27 people, that's a great start and you can certainly build on that to reach your 100 people. An email to those 27 asking them each to invite 2 or 3 other people might be a good next step. Steve Kranz On Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 6:59 PM, MICHAEL SMITH Patty Smith <

Hello everyone, Boozhoo; I have taken the role as manager for this on line forum because I feel like it could be a good thing. I've hit a bit of a technology wall and gotten confused but am grateful to Patty for being the first to post an introduction. Thanks to Steve Kranz who manages a forum in Winona and is helping us get ours off the ground, I realize the "reply all" option is an easy way to post a message to this forum even if I haven't sorted the rest yet. Everyone should try it, so while we're waiting to launch we can learn something about each other, which after all is what this forum is all about. I'm 40, with four children, the oldest 21 and the youngest 16 and a junior at CL-B. She and her sister who's 17 work at Teal's in town. Deborah and I have been married 18 years. She just started a job at the Tribal college and I've been writing for the Cass Lake Times for a couple years now. I love getting to know and listen to people through my work, something I'd do much less on my own. I grew up north of Chicago and we moved our family up to Bemidji in '92 and out to Farden Twnshp in '94. I've worked as a CNA and a direct care provider in a variety of long-term care facilities and as a special ed teacher and paraprofessional. I've lost two brothers along the way and still have a sister in Wisconsin. My parents are both still alive in northern Illinois and we make a trip to see them a couple times a year. Deborah's mom has a place out with ours and she works at the Welcome Center rest area. There's a lot that needs to be talked about, a lot said and even more listened to. I hope this forum becomes a vehicle for that to happen. Get two friends to join and 'reply to all' with something about yourself.

We can view the membership of the forum at forums.e-democracy.org/cl and click on members. I'm pretty sure that's the link. You all should explore the site a little bit. There's close to 50 enrolled, so we're about half way to launch the forum officially. But we can all post to all the members by clicking "reply all"to this or any email with a <email obscured> tag

Hello E Democracy friends, I'm a Native American woman, age 46, residing in rural Pennington (E of Bemidji). I have relocated to my family's land last September 2007. I have two children, Aaron age 25, and Tara age 22, and a granddaughter - Kendra, age 1.5. All live in the twin city metro. I am the Executive Director of Native Vote Alliance of Minnesota, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that empowers Native people in Minnesota to protect sovereign rights through educating and engaging Native communities the importance of their voting power. I believe strongly that Native Americans need to increase our level of civic participation as we are the last people on the government radar with healthcare, economic growth, to name just a couple of areas that Native Americans rank lowest with public policy. Hi everyone. Hey Dan, who's all on this forum line now? I've heard from you and Patty so far. Anyway... My name is Patsy Gordon, I am the Editor of the Debahjimon, the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Tribal newspaper. My most favorite hobby I have is traveling and I am fortunate enough to be able to travel to Mexico every winter, sometimes even twice! Another favorite hobby I have is going to yard sales. I have three foster children who are also my great nieces and whom I call my own. My husband Tom and I never had any children of our own. Boozhoo, two leggeds. I am Elaine Fleming. I chair the Arts & Humanities Department at Leech Lake Tribal College. I have three children in college this fall: Simone at Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire; Elaine at Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Shea at Leech Lake Tribal College, Cass Lake. I am proud of the success of all of our children who have risen out of hard times and taken on the challenge of higher education. Shopping last night, I was unhappily surprised at the cost of a can of vegetables. That's why I dug up the sunny side of my front lawn on main street (2d St) and planted a vegetable garden this year. However, the summer was dry and water costs too much to water adequately. Still, I love the plant beings dwelling in my front yard. This summer, I took my daughters on the Longest Walk. We camped and walked from Carlisle, Pennsylvania to Washington, D.C. in the month of July. We walked to honor sovereignty of Indigenous American nations, to speak for our environment, and to protect sacred places like Bear Butte. Even though I understand that the earth, water, and air are sacred, I began to wonder where the sacred places are on the Leech Lake Nation and in Cass Lake. What do you think?

Boohzoo to everyone I'am kenn Mitchell and I live on the east end of C.L. I'am new at this typing so if I make a mistake. forgive me but there are times when something needs to be said and I hope this will be a good outlet without some of the language I've seen on other forums. some one asked about any sacered sites here on the rez.Are you aware of the turtle mound up by Inger? I would be honored to show you that site if you wish, I feel it is about time I go there and pay my respect . But it is honor for me to be a part of this forum and I hope we'll learn something positive from this. HOW!!
Hello everyone I have lived in Cass Lake most of my adult life. I am married and have two adult children. My kids have both graduated from Cass Lake Bena school system. My son has just finished 5 years of service in the Navy and is now in school for DNR land management. His love of the land and this area has always been a big part of his life. My daughter with the same love of the land has had one year of education in the same area and has decided to see some of the rest of the world before she goes back to school. My husband's family has been here in Cass Lake for a few generations and he works for Cass County road crew. I am now the branch manager at the Cass Lake Community Library. However, I have worked in several other positions within our community. I am also on the school board for the Cass Lake Bena school district. I have always done some community activity for our area from Girl Scouts to Lioness and supported the activities my children belonged to. I still help when I can. I like the idea that we can connect this way with others from our area and hope that we can make this an opportunity to see how many of us there are that cares and wants to see what we can do to promote the best we have to offer in this and the surrounding area. Beth Norenberg
Thanks for to everyone who has offered introductions. It's good to know more about who is here and see how connected your are to the community. You're really off to a great start in recruiting. With just a little more effort, you will be ready to launch the forum. Would someone like to just summarize where things are at (what recruitment efforts have been done so far, how successful each item was, how many people have been recruited, any ideas for moving foreward, etc.)? . . . so that everyone knows what has been done and how much is left to do before things can get started. Thanks, Steve Kranz

My name is Sharon Mitchell. I have lived in Cass Lake for 12 years. I am
a home maker currently raising great grand children after I was forced to
retire due to my health. but i actually think working would be a whole lot
easier then the job I have now.
About 2 yrs ago i got involved with the Horizons Program . Horizons is a
Northwest Area Foundations Program that is focused on reducing poverty in
communities. We needed to engage the community in leadership training, and
conduct focus groups to identify issues and plan what we wanted to see
happen in Cass lake area. We were able to complete the program but getting
people to participate was extremely difficult for a lot of reasons.which
leads to the reason I wanted this area to join e-democracy and have a way to
communicate to interested parties things happening, events, and networking.
We are such a diverse community, that at times we allow that to divide us
and we can become territorial, and not work together on anything. Every once
in a while something happens that brings many people together for one cause
and after that's addressed, we all go back to our places and don't have
interaction with one another until something else happens. Part of that is
the Poverty and part of it is learned behavior and part of it is apathy with
the" nothing is going to change anyway" thinking. But I am a great believer
in change and We are all Cass lakers or from the Cass lake area and We are
all capable of making things better for the genrations to come.
I am also a recovering radical, so if I rant and rave about something now
and then , just remind me the FBI and home land security are watching and I
will quickly get a handle on it. I have escaped going to prison so far and
now just isnt a good time for me to jepordize my freedom but there was a
time when I was willing to give my life for what I believed in, now my life
belongs to a 2year old, a 3year old and a six year old and sadly to say I am
all they have to depend on for keeping them with family in the community.
Maybe after they are grown I will ease up on the recovery program.
My intrests are varied, my talents are ..........well I cant sing but that
dosent stop me from trying, especially in places where I can get away with
it .But i can whip up a decent meal, sew a star quilt, drive 90 miles an
hour{ well the officer said it was 90 ...but I didnt think my car could go
that fast.}and put up with extemely crabby people.{Some of you know my
husband Kenn, who people call Grampa Crabby.}Professionally I am adjunct at
White earth Tribal and Community Collage and I sit on the Board of directors
of the Minnesota Parent Leadership Network which is a network of Parents
through out the state who all have children with mental health issues.
So I know that if we can get parents through out the state, who are raising
children with mental health issues, working together and making the world a
better place for our kids, demanding a place at the table and commanding
professionals to work with us. Connecting and supporting one another then
surely we can connect and support each other here in the Cass Lake area.
I've made most of the contacts personally when I run into people during the day. Some I've contacted by email and then followed up with a personal visit and usually it's not til after the personal visit that most get on board, but that's not always true. The Cass Lake mayor has joined as has one member of the Leech Lake Tribal council. The director of the Leech Lake Area Boys and Girls club was a member and said he would send and invitation to the four area branches of the club, which span the reservation. Then I saw that he left the forum whether that was a conscious decision or a "wrong click" on the website I haven't got back with him to find out yet. The supervisor for the Chippewa National Forest which is headquartered here is interested in being a part but has a few concerns about access to his email on the web that we are currently trying to assure him about. Hopefully a few more from the forest service will get on board. HIt a bit of a dead end with Leech Lake MIS (management Information systems) hoping to get word out through their email system, although he got on board but said he didn't have a very broad list of contacts he could use. Tried to get notice in the Debahjimon (Tribal newspaper) but it didn't make it in this past month, though the editor is on board as a member. There's an information and sign-up sheet at the Family Center, and an information sheet posted in the Post Office, though I don't think either have brought a member yet, not sure. Need to talk to the Lions club president and a few teachers/administrators at the school yet, now that classes have resumed. Working on contacts at the IHS hospital. Cass Lake's White Earth office is on board and working to make some contacts through the racial justice project in Bemidji. No state reps yet, but a number of the candidates for city council are members. That's pretty much what I know. I haven't talked to Sharon for a long time, so I'll have to get in touch with her again her. And of course everyone is trying to get their two more members. But I wonder if everyone who agreed to be a part has received word that they are members? I talked to one yesterday who said she hadn't heard anything yet. Keep plugging away!

Oh yeah, we've got quite a few members of the school board – through a forward from the board chair – and some administration and staff from the Tribal college. So there you go.

Greetings, Cass Lakers! My name is Lenny Fineday, the son of the late Rev. Leonard Fineday and Mary Fineday. I come from a very close knit family; I have two brothers and four sisters and two amazing nieces (one 7 years old and a 2nd grader at CLBES and the other is 2 years old and living in Plymouth, MN with her mom and dad). I am an enrolled member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe. I was born at the Cass Lake Indian Hospital in October of 1982 and was raised in the Cass Lake community. Speaking of school, I am a 2001 graduate of Cass Lake-Bena high school, a 2004 graduate of Bethel University in St. Paul, MN with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a minor in Leadership Studies, and I am currently three weeks into my coursework on a joint Juris Doctorate (law degree) and a Master of Arts in Political Science at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. Thanks to the first hand testimony of my father and the persistent and perseverant upbringing by my loving parents, I am fortunate enough to say that I have never used alcohol, illicit drugs, or even tobacco, other than for ceremonial purposes. I say this not to place myself or my family on a pedestal or in any way place us above anybody else, but rather to point out that in our community this is possible. I was taught and I firmly believe that we should always have hope- hope in each other, hope in ourselves, and, perhaps most importantly, hope in our community. I was taught and espoused these ideas even before hope became the political buzzword in the upcoming national election! Despite what it has come to stand for on the national stage, I believe hope is important because we all need a common starting point, and this is where we can all agree. I believe that all of us want what is truly in the best interest of our community and to leave a better, stronger community for generations to come. The questions of how to get there are where we often disagree and where a concept such as this forum can prove invaluable- not to bring together people of the same mind on every issue, but to allow us to voice our individual perspective and to see the diverse range of opinions on issues of the day. It can also help us understand one another better as neighbors and friends. In closing, I would just like to say that I am looking forward to this forum as a way to help me keep in touch with the area even while I am away at school. Every time I am away from Cass Lake, I miss it. I know that Cass Lake is my home and I am proud to say it. I have lived in Tulsa, OK, in the twin cities, in Washington, D.C. and now in Milwaukee, WI (though only for a month so far), and I have discovered that there is nowhere else that is really, truly my home, and I am looking forward to being back in a few short years. Until then, I look forward to staying updated by this forum. Thank you for reading! Lenny Fineday
As the Civics/Government teacher at Cass Lake-Bena HS and concerned community member, I want to tell you all how much I appreciate you all willing to do this. It is an excellent example for me to point to for our students to be more active in their role as citizens. I am promoting this forum for all my students to join up, and I would appreciate any support you would give the students in this matter. This should turn out to be a positive example of how the average citizen makes a difference. Thank you all again- Brian Stoebner "The impact you have on one life may impact the world."
Good afternoon to everyone, my name is Jennie Reyes and have been married to Mark Reyes Sr for 29 years. My parents are Roberta (Holstein) Wind and the late Alvin John Wind Sr., My grandparents were Marion (Budreau)Folstrom and Joseph Holstein Sr. and Alice (Gwinn) Wind and Levi Wind. I have two brothers and four sisters, five children who have littered me with 18 wonderful grandchildren. I think I'm too young to have that many grandchildren but the circle of life continues and I have a petition to get my two sons neutered. Just kidding my sons. I was born Oct 3, 1958 at the Cass Lake Indian Hospital and grow up in the Superfund site (south side of tracks). We lived in a one room shack, no running water, no electricity, had a wood stove and outhouse. (ha) Anyway, lived in Cass Lake all my life and I tried to get involved with whatever I could to try and make a difference in our world. I'm like Lenny Fineday, I get so so homesick when I leave Cass Lake. When I'm in a different town or city, I look at people and they start looking like someone from our home. Anyway, I graduated in 1976 and continued on to college for only three years, but I try to take a class here and there. I started working for the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe in 1979 and still here. I've been active on different committees and volunteered for whatever causes I believe in. Anyway I have attached a site for all to go look at. It is amazing, this is how I want our children to be.....outspoken, challenged, smart, etc.......... http://www.dallasisd.org/keynote.htm Check it out and everyone have a wonderful weekend.
Hello Everyone, My name is Jolyn (Holstein) Donnell. I was born to Joseph and Beulah (Lewis) Holstein and have resided in Cass Lake for 40 years. Two years were out of state. I have one sibling, Jean (Holstein) LaRoque. My grandparents are Marion (Budreau) Folstrom & Joseph Holstein, Sr. and Florence (Shaygonabe) Burmiester & Jacob Lewis. I have had the privilege to start school in Cass Lake-Bena and graduate from Cass Lake-Bena. I have been happily married for 18 years to Jeffrey Donnell. We were blessed with three children; Cara (21), Alissa(18), Jeffrey(16). Although some days they make me wonder if it really was a blessing! Only kidding. We also have a son-in-law (not legally) Kellen Brown. Cara & Kellen are expecting their first child in the spring and both are in college. Their path in life will be an interesting journey. Alissa is attending Fond Du Lac Tribal College for a Corrections Officer. She teases her brother that she is going to come back to Cass Lake and be his probation officer. Jeffrey is a 10th grader at CLB. Jeffrey has alot of extra energy and a big heart. We have always been proud to say our children were raised in Cass Lake. When I tell people we are from Cass Lake, Jeff, Sr. is quick to point out he is from Red Lake but merely lives in Cass Lake. This is a continuous joke & debate between us. Jeffrey and I have always welcomed the many friends of our children into our home & lives. Some have lived with us for an extended period of time or just an evenings or overnight. Jeff even bought a bed for one of young friend. My sister's family and mine have dinner with our parents almost every weekend, along with the extra kids. I would like to share a story with you that will give you an inside view of our family: In 2005 the girls basketball team went to state and stayed in downtown Minneapolis. My mom is known for bringing everything but the kitchen sink for her grandchildren & extra little people when she travels. Well as it turned out the hotel did not have a microwave for the variety of different foods she had brought for the players & family members. Two blocks down the street is a Target Store and pretty soon here comes my dad hauling a microwave in downtown Minneapolis for the kids. I have been taught family values from two of the most loving individuals and without a doubt will pass them on. I enjoy being able to participate in committees and boards that will make a difference in kids lives. Every kid should have the same opportunity as all others therefore every kid should be represented equally. A child whether a honor student or a struggler (as my son would say) should be given every opportunity to succeed. I am parent that has experienced an honor student child to a child going cass county courthouse. I can understand where a variety of parents are coming from. Success for one child is not the same for the next and success will come from within. This is what I work for on the Cass Lake School Board and Local Indian Education Committee. Kind of sounds like a campaign message but I am merely expressing my thoughts. The activities I enjoy are athletic events, genealogy research, reading, card games at my parents and ricing (which I have been doing since 4th grade but after this year I quit - I am too chubby and out of shape). I have read the many introductions and feel like like I know some of you a little better. Thank you for sharing and I look forward to seeing you out in the community somewhere. Jolyn (Holstein) Donnell
Good afternoon. Zhoonia-B'waabeg Gozhe-genz indizhinikaaz. Ind-ojibwem bungii etago. The reason being, that I was adopted out to Zhaagaanaashi early in life but made my way back to my people, eventually. I was here in the early 70's and the last time was in 1980 before I moved here in 2000. I now live at my dad, Simon Jackson's old house out by Pennington, but I was born here in Cass Lake, I work in Cass Lake, and I do most of my business here in Cass Lake. I have always felt that this is my home town, and the first time I felt that I was actually "home" was here in Cass Lake. Looking at the list of people that have joined this forum, I know most of you, as a matter of fact, I'm probably related to most of you. And I think most of you know me by my English name, Kat Norton. I'm one of the graduating class of 2007 from the LLTC. I was off work (willingly?) for two years, but now my degree is paying off. When I first moved here in 2000, my first job was as Case Mgmt Assistant to Matt Hunt's Detox Case Mgmt Program for the Leech Lake A&D Division. This was my first encounter with the chemical dependency field (except for going to treatment my self). That's where I first learned how to do Rule 25 Assessments, which is what I'm doing now, only things are a - little - different. Now I have an office of my own, for the first time in my life. And, that's all I do is Rule 25 Assessments. No transporting, no testifying in court during civil commitments. There's still some case management involved, but not like what Matt and I used to have to contend with. I may have been off work for 2 years, but I think I worked harder than I ever have. I was/am involved in Cass Lake Horizons. We're the ones that built the Indian Village out by Chucky's Chicken, the Odenah Market. The long and short of why I wanted to join this forum, is that I'm very interested and concerned with what goes on in this community - and what doesn't. I agree that we've needed something like this for a long time and I'm glad that a lot of things we've needed are becoming a reality. Change will come when the many become one voice. Mii gwetch. Gigaa-waabimin!

I'm Steven Clift and if you'll have me, I am honored to be a virtual member of
the Cass Lake area community. I am the founder and leader of E-Democracy.Org.
In short, I believe local people should be able to communicate about public
issues that matter to them online in an effective, respectful, and civil way.
This is one way, using our real names, we can have agenda setting power online
(and in-person).
I live in the Minneapolis and have family spread out across Minnesota. I am
married and have two small children age 1 and 3. Life is pretty crazy. :-)

Greetings Everyone. I am Allan Olson, many of you know who I am or have seen me at school events or read my name in the paper. I am realtively new to this area having worked at the Cass Lake Times since August of 2006 and have enjoyed getting to know many of you. A little background. I am 30 married for 10 yrs next summer have four children, Nikolai 5- attending Solway-Abigail, 2, Marcus 2 and Alivia 1 next month those that attend games have probably seen my crazy little family. My kids drive me crazy but I wouldn't be without any of them. I was born and raised in Lake of the Woods and someday maybe not until I'm old and gray will be moving back there. I attended home school from grades 1-12 worked two years attended NW Tech in Thief River moved to Bemidji in 2001 to attend BSU. I am a BS in BS (journalism/Mass Comm) from BSU. I enjoy hunting, fishing, reading,(not enough time to do any of these) and virtually anything in the great outdoors providing its not 85 degrees above or below the donut. My primary duties at the paper are covering school related/chamber related events and I am also the advertising representative. Between Daniel and I we try our best to cover what we can in the time that we have. If anyone has any ideas on improving the paper please help us out. Without our readers keeping us informed we couldn't do our job. One suggestion was more classifieds. Help us out everyone someone out there want's to buy your stuff. This week's paper brings about some exciting changes. We have switched paper sizes. We have gone from the tabloid format to a broadsheet like the bemidij pioneer/tribune etc.. We welcome all comments good, bad or ugly about the new paper size. Finally-this is an important year for our country and many changes have been made and many many more need to be made. So please no matter what you might think about our candidates running for any office school board, city, pikebay, county, state rep, presidential, get out and vote on November 4. Your VOTE DOES MATTER and your children and my children depend on ALL us to make what we feel is the best decision for our city, twp, county, state or country! Have a great week, and keep on reading your local paper! Sincerley, Allan Olson
I'm moving this under the "Intro" thread in case any of you missed it or
didin't have a chance to read it.
Hello Cass Lake Leech Lake E-Democracy Members
I am Richard ( Rick) Baird. I have been a part of the Area since my youth
when I would visit my grandparents in the in the summer. I have always loved
Cass Lake and all that it offers. We moved as a family of 10 to Cass Lake when
I was 12 My father purchased Lake Region Lumber Company in 1969. I went to high
school in the old school and graduated in 1973. I worked in the Lumber yard
until 1980 when it burned down. I then moved with my new wife Arliss to New
Mexico where I worked in the oil and gas industry for 12 years. In 1992 my
father Richard (Dick) passed away after a long battle with cancer. Leaving my
mother and my brother Jeff with Cass Metal Craft. So loaded up the truck, our 3
kids and moved home to assist my mother and brother in operating Cass Metal
Craft. Here I am 16 years later still Married and still happy to call Cass Lake
my home. Enough about me.
What would an Ideal place to live look and feel like.

Hi! My name is Karen Fineday and I've lived in Cass Lake since 1982. I first moved up to this area after high school to attend BSU. After graduation I was hired by the CL-B Indian Education program where I also did some grant writing. I'm married and divorced with no kids. I used to be pretty active in shool/community issues, but after my divorce I was too busy trying to survive; communtiy involvement fell by the wayside. I left my job at the school and returned to BSU for my Master's degree. After that, I took a position at the Palace Casino until the right "career opportunity" came up. As it happens, I'm still at the Palace seventeen years later!! I am a homeowner and live with my elderly mother on the east end of CL. Because I work lots of evening and night hours, I never really got back into the swing of community involvement; and, for a while back then, things got really political and divisive (sp?) and I got kind of burned out on it. Anyway, that's the short version of who I am!! : ) I just want to say that I think this Forum is a really good idea; a way for people like me to ease back in to community involvement. I look forward to sharing views and discussing issues.
We've picked up quite a few members recently and I want to welcome all our new members and those who have not taken the opportunity so far, to introduce yourself. The introductions thread was a popular one when we were first getting rolling and it is an important part of maintaining a unity of feeling among us while debating and sharing ideas. After all, the forum is about providing a civil, comfortable place to listen and voice ideas. Perhaps after an introduction, list a local issue or two you'd like us to discuss in the future. To catch up on past introductions, see: http://forums.e-democracy.org/r/topic/4IcwoU0hTWLQ8gbK8Rtnpg And again, welcome
Good evening, I am Diane Pittman, a family doctor who has practiced on the Leech Lake Indian reservation for 23 years. Until last spring I was with Indian Health Service and served for 7 years as Clinical Director at the hospital in Cass Lake. I am passionate about this community and passionate about making sure everyone can get the things that make for good health and have access to excellent health care when it is needed. I am deeply concerned about our abuse of the environment, racism, and poverty. I also believe that problems in communities are solved from the inside out. The wisdom and expertise is right here One way I address these concerns is though Shifting Gears, a project I started that collects and repairs old bicycles and gives them to people who need them. We teach mechanical skills and help young people learn about bicycle repair. I also try to do as much of my own commuting as possible by bicycle and I work with Peoples Church to help house and feed homeless people of all colors. I live in Bemidji with my husband Larry Krantz and right now am taking a sabbatical from full time family practice. I work intermittantly in the emergency departments at Cass Lake and Bemidji and am studying acupuncture, planning to incorporate this ancient healing art into my medical practice in the future. I have been listening with interest to the forum since its start. I am hoping that we might engage in some discussion/dreaming about how we might have a healthier communtiy and how we might improve quality and access to health care for all of us. I am feeling hope with the political changes surrounding the election and look forward to gathering and celebrating with this community next week. I'll be a little late (7:30) but I'll be there with bells on! I often close letters with the phrase "En la buena lucha" This is Spanish for "In the good struggle." and is often used by advocates for change in Central America. It is what I hear in the forum. Good stuggle. En la buen lucha,
Diane
Good Morning Diane, I am also interested in improving the quality and access to health care for everyone. I sit on the Public Health Advisory Committee (PHAC) for the City of Minneapolis representing the Native American community. I would be more than happy to share information with you and would appreciate any suggestions you may have that I might present to PHAC. I would also like to say I am very glad to hear you plan to incorporate acupuncture in your medical practice. I have been getting acupuncture treatments for a little over a year now and my health has improved dramatically. I see doctors at Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Clinics. My blood pressure has gone down and my blood sugar has gone down. I had an injury in my shoulder from coaching basketball that I suffered with for 5 years. Two different western doctors told me I would need surgery to relieve the pain. The pain is completely gone after one session of acupuncture (my first treatment) and I didn't even go in for the pain in my shoulder. That was a bonus fix. My wife says I could be the diabetic poster boy for acupuncture. I could go on with more examples of the benefits of acupuncture but I won't. I am glad to know that you plan to incorporate acupuncture in your practice. I am very grateful my wife introduced me to acupuncture. I will not be at the celebration next week but I wish you and everyone a great time. Doug Douglas K. Lemon President D. K. I'm a little behind the curve on this introduction thread, I know! I've viewed the forum for a while, but haven't been an active participant yet. I'll give a brief intro, and try to carve out a little time each week to visit the forum. I was born and raised in Cass Lake, graduating from CL-B high school in 1994. I attended Mankato State University for two years, then transferred to Crown College in 1996, graduating in 1999 with Bachelor's degrees in Secondary Education and Christian Studies, and a minor in Social Science.. After college, I worked in the Minnesota PGA Section as a golf professional for five years, leaving the business when my first son, Wesley came along. My wife, Amy, has put up with me for just over 10 years now. We moved back (well, for me it was moving back) to Cass Lake in April 2004. I ran the lending department of Western Bank in Cass Lake for a couple years, moving in 2006 to my current position as Director of Institutional Advancement for Leech Lake Tribal College. It's an interesting and very challenging job, encompassing fundraising, marketing and public relations work, in addition to the infamous "other duties as assigned" part of the job description :) I have two energetic, oversized sons: Wes just turned five, and Jack is nearing the 18-month mark. In what little spare time I have, I like to golf, fish, and golf some more. I joined this forum because I think it provides an accessible, safe way for people to share their thoughts about the Cass Lake area, for better and for worse. I also hope to be able to keep people up to date on what's happening here at Leech Lake Tribal College, which I believe has the most potential of any institution in this area to transform our community into the vision of what we all want it to be. I look forward to talking with all of you, both on this forum and in person.
Kyle
Welcome Kyle, you have a positive attitude and love for this area and every one can benefit from your insights. I think you are a good role model for the young people at the college hoping to advance themselves. I always enjoy talking about the market and baseball with you stay posted! The Future Looks Bright! Thanks, Kyle. Glad you're a potentially posting member of the forum.
brand new here- glad i read the last post... may explain why i could not post a question to the forum, oops. my name is reyna and i have been living in bena for almost two years. i am finding the posts here ironic in that whether i stay or not depends on accessing health care, safe housing, etc. between challenges in that regard- i teach bead work, do free lance media representation/pr, and somehow always find myself involved in working with kids and critters. the latter is much to my immense pleasure, of course. though in my 40's i will hop on a swing set in a second. my undergrad degree is in economics and had planned a ph.d. in public policy before acquiring a disability. i'm one of those people who can do the `soft' stuff, ie. get along with (most) people and switch gears and crunch numbers in five seconds or less. strong background in marketing, small biz mgmt. and a number of specialized areas as well. done a varied bit of advocacy work over the years, very passionate about children the and the enviornment and have a deep concern regarding wolf. if i find a good little corner here, i plan to get involved again in doing respite foster care and just maybe trying to launch some sort of cooperative for marketing bead work and other arts. so many people want to learn, that i wound up running a sort of `apprenticeship' program out of my studio in duluth. it worked reasonably well. glad to meet all of you and will keep lurking in the forums. hope to make the pole ceremony tomorrow (fingers crossed). OH- i am still hauling a studio's worth of beads and supplies with me, and if anyone needs them for a project with kids, i will donate happily if asked! i have a massive supply of seed beads. reyna and comet the wonderdog (service dog)
Thank you for allowing my opinion in this forum and thank you all for sharing yourself. Myself I may seem to most as an extremist. To most who do not know me, call me a hypocrite. My opinion often times may seem pessimistic. My ideas, concepts and perspectives may be offensive. Some and even maybe the majority will feel overwhelmed with what i have stated. May even disagree with me... I am a product of why a forum such as this gets formed. So there for if the people here, so care and lets go beyond that and say has compassion towards the people who live in Cass Lake, Leech Lake area. Now lets go another step further and say has passion, real passion and if you are people who have integrity, to whom are real optimists Who pride themselves on being realist and are part of this forum because you are a believer, Who is hopeful that we can come to terms that poverty is #1 in all our priorities. Only then can i involve myself to the solution. You see our eyes are trained to see what they see. I see mass corruption and ill intentions, favoritism. Mass Neglect, abuse of all sorts. I see exploitation and fraud from those whom are responsible to ensure the safest environment for our children. I will not be in this forum to feed into any of that or to expose of it publicly either. I do not have hate in me, i do take this issue very serious always open to debate as long as we deal with the facts. One of my greatest aspirations is to turn poverty into paradise right here in Cass Lake Minnesota, I believe, I truly believe in the undeniable truth. That right here, right now in this forum there are at least five people that would like to be on the board of trustees, hopefully more. Open up a Non-Profit 501(c) Cass Lake Partnership Corporation our purpose will be for the greatest cause ever "Poverty into Paradise" We're not just dealing with education, chemical addiction, unemployment, crime, finances, parenting, culture, Housing, food, transportation, isolation, sadness, loneliness, hopelessness. The majority reading this know that above and beyond all that this environment has had a negative impact on our lives and continue to for our children who reside in the area i currently live and know (Cass Lake). For those of you who think not, i am more than open to debate... I do not like being the bear of bad news, however i have seen to many wrongful deaths and long term prison sentences within my family here. I see mass production of this way of life that has been chosen by lack of knowledge. We the people have to understand we're the power, and cause a movement. Because there is no other "cause" that matters most. There is no greater purpose than ours. Do what you like, like what you are doing. "Poverty into Paradise" I am sure the world will conspire opening up more businesses than ever before employing more people at one time than ever before in Cass Lake Minnesota's history. I am a dreamer, big thinker and a person that deals with these issues intimately. I am a businessman, however i am a father before all, I know success is not only measured in money and happiness very rarely has anything to do with having or not having money. I have the ability to make a lot of money. I have learned how to make money quicker than most. It was survival skills always. There for me had to be certain way! My survival skills are like none i have ever met. I have employed 1200 to 1500 people, rented 25 plus places to live, founded/ operated/ developed 1/2 dozen different businesses all over Minnesota. I have gained the courage and confidence by every experience which i had to stop and look fear in the face. I must have done what I thought I could not. The unknown and the unexpected was the result of fear now the end of fear. My name is Scott Swanholm Sr. I consider myself a true Warrior been charged criminally 100 times convicted 20 however, it is not about when i fell down- but about when i got up. I never lost, although most would say i have. It is funny to me to think back on the days of deception. Most would disagree and think i was very successful and that I am no longer and have not been for years. LOL reminiscing about the last five years of my life "The world has been my home."
Thanks for doing this introduction, Scott. I'm glad you are a part and that you decided to post. I look forward to hearing what else you have to say. Even if you don't think some people will like what you have to say, if you think it could move us all in a good direction, I think you should share it. As long as we are all careful not to attack each other and instead to speak from our own experiences, especially from our own successes, without tearing down someone else, that can almost always be constructive. That's where we need to go, and how we can bring the most people along for the ride. I think yes, out of poverty; but even more than that, to a new way of measuring our success, one that does not measure by personal gain, family gain, but one that looks around more broadly and supports all healthy growth, all movement that brings our focus toward our interrelatedness, our interconnectedness. Then when one person, when one family stays together, helps each other up, supports its children in the good way, and more babies are born in a good way, again and again, as the cycle repeats, the first time and everytime, we all get richer. Again, Miigwetch.

Anin, welcome. I look forward to your views. I have always believed the number one problem here was poverty. I would welcome a chance to discuss some of your ideas. If anyone else is interested then perhaps we can do a get together. The holiday season is coming and people are getting caught up into that but I can always make time for the opportunity to discuss making our coner of the world a better place.

Good Day My People... Continuing from yesterday... We Do Not Need To Know Everything To Do Everything The world has been my home, I have intentionally chose to be homeless for the past five years. Although I could have went with the majority have what most would consider a nice home, nice life, nice community like I have had better than most. I went the distance, as I thought. Yes i had the nicest house on the block in one of the ten best neighborhoods to raise children in the United States. Yeah had 120+ people employed a block away from our house. In my office building that stretched a quarter block with our own drive through sally port. Yes I walked into a company with only three employees a year earlier in a town that i did not know or know anyone in that town prior to moving. Started in an office suite for $10.00 Hr as a sales agent. I moved hundred of miles to do this, matter of fact i moved from a nice house practically free rent- government subsidized to an apartment to where i had to pay 500.00 a month for rent. Year latter I was cutting deals with corporate executives representing fortune 500 companies. Eating at the best places, signing so many checks i had to get a stamper with my signature. This was by far not the first business i have had cleverly founded, developed with precision and poorly operated. That house had $500.00+ pictures adorn the walls and a lot of them, then to sit down at the family table that sat twelve on a $300.00 chair. Wow that place and time in my life I had felt successful spending amounts of money that most would be happy to retire with, I made in a year. I have had school teachers employed by my companies, Had a company that was 90% Native American in Bemidji that taught employment skills while working. The name of the business was- Handyman Network- Wow now this project i am going to expose what was an original successful trial version of what will become a role model in business practice. What i am proposing to everyone in this forum that Cass Lake Partnership Corporation will have subsidiary companies such as Daycare, Retarant, Cab, Housing, Detox!, Employment Training, Life Skills, Group Homes, Elder Care, Auto Repair, "Well being place for healthy minds and bodies, and the list goes on...Community Garden, Second Hand Store... etc. There needs to be an alliance and a deep rooted level of communication among the existing organizations that are already obligated to components of poverty such as the Boys and Girls Club, The Tribe, Schools, Day Cares, Counselors, Advocates, Politicians, Restaurants, Halfway House, etc. Handyman Network was a company i started from scratch $0.00 in a town i knew no one, came there fresh out of jail, homeless as ever staying at the homeless shelter with no money. getting kicked out first thing in the morning, not able to return until dinner time in the in the frigid winter. I met some real wonderful people Pastor Stan Nelson furnished my place, while there was another man that gave me a chance and hired me to work, however there was no work. He rented me out a place on the hopes he would. This is only after 10 days in the homeless shelter. One year latter I had acquired 20k in business asset bought the old bug school van and got very busy the phone was ringing off the hook with business our job log was averaging five jobs a day employing an average of 20 people. Doing everything from raking to remodeling, roofing, we offered 50 something different services on a flier that was a 1/3 of sheet of paper. So we got three fliers to a sheet and delivered them under the windshield wipers at all the major stores like Walmart, Target etc in town. Basically that piece of paper with my phone number that guaranteed lowest price that also said we are a network of skilled handymen that specialize in the fallowing 50 something different trades immediately started with a bang. This was not a business i liked, matter of fact i know nothing about carpentry. However, again i had to be close to my children and this was the best market available to me at the time where i could make money. That I did...Became the "king of Contractors" again we do not need to know everything to do everything and I know I have said "I" way too much. Never have I ever done anything by myself and neither has anyone else who ever says they have is either lying or has never done it. I work for no one, we work together, we make each other strongest. The good in me, is the good in you, is the good in us. Always doing the next best thing -Scott Swanholm Sr. Will Continue Tomorrow...
See Handyman Network was owned by a leech lake native and myself, partner latter tranfered ownership to a cousin of his from Redlake. had no choice...had to keep up with my older brother (only brother) Who is in federal prison for selling drugs.
I apologize last two sentences i cut out and did not realize that was at the bottom, however, this intro has gone on and on... It's nice to know that there are concerned people and this many all put together at one place to communicate with in such a small area. Very, Very Powerful, I am not going to waste your time, lets apply ourselves and make a difference, a real difference in peoples lives. there are ideas that already have came that's great... C'mon bead-work, Yes absolutely and when it comes to an authentic hand made product it is all about marketing, there was also another awesome idea that came in...I am telling you all Cass Lake Partnership Corporation needs space for us to gather, I am going to throw down a proposal that will be something we can do that will enrich our lives as well as others. . So I have came up with a plan that everyone can participate in. will be posting a rough draft of an opportunity to this forum first to be a part of history in the making. Cause: BREAKING THE LINE OF POVERTY ONE SMILE AT A TIME Mission: Poverty Into Paradise This is where i am beginning with great success. "Once ignorant, now knowledgeable, now you have to be accountable and i am going to hold you responsible as a family member" Opening up for discussion tomorrow with the rough draft of a business proposal that will be directed to everyone on this site. Look people we own the slogan"Poverty into Paradise" google that once That is our slogan what do you think of it ? I believe in the majority always as long as we can agree on the same purpose Thanks for your time, Sincerely, Scott Swanholm
I'm looking forward to hearing about the business plan/partnership your talking about. In some ways it sounds similar to creating a venue for artists and crafts work like the "Indian Village" that the Horizons Group built and tried to get participation for last summer. It also sounds similar to the directory of artists and links to websites that the Northern Community Internet creators for the Cass Lake Leech Lake area have tried to get participation in. All good ideas waiting to take off. There should be at least a few willing and waiting for something like this. Sounds like you've heard from a few people already off line. And I'd like to hear more too as I try to write up a proposal over the next couple of weeks for the Knight Foundation, something of an opportunity Steven Clift sent our way. They'll sponsor a innovative project in communities that uses "open source technology" with a journalistic flavor to inspire growth in communities. I'm just thinking that if we can convince these folks to sponsor a building and equipment to encourage all ages of our communites to become involved and learn about each other, to share their concerns and lives and history, and document it in writing or video or radio worthy recordings/programs, we could have a center for all kinds of sharing and promotion of our resources, especially our people's talents.
