City Campers,
Over the past several months I've fielded many questions about when and
where the next City Camp will happen. City Camp
DC<http://barcamp.pbworks.com/CityCampDC>already happened. As a
result of those questions - and some convincing by a
handful of you - I've started thinking seriously about the answer(s).
In a nutshell, I'm thinking about a City Camp "world tour" starting in 2010
and continuing through 2011. I've been in contact with potential local
partners in Philadelphia, London, and Edmonton. Additionally, I've be asked
about feasibility of conducting City Camps in developing nations: Africa,
India, Indonesia. The Code for America cities make sense, too.
Ultimately it will take committed, local partners to determine where City
Camp World Tour (CCWT) will land. I'll need help finding facilities,
caterers, sponsors, and most importantly: local government participants.
So, I'm appealing to you all today for help finding those local partners.
Based on highly scientific research I'm most interested in these cities:
Boston
Boulder
Philly
Seattle
Washington, D.C.
Miami
Austin
Atlanta
New York
London, UK
Helsinki, Finland
Mumbai, India
Ahmedabad, India
Kigali, Rwanda
Nairobi, Kenya
Johannesburg, South Africa
Manila, Philippines
Bangkok, Thailand
Edmonton, Canada
Galway, Ireland
St. Petersburg, Russia
Auckland or Wellington, New Zealand
(Australia)
(Mexico)
(Central/South America?)
Here's a map view:

But I'm open to working on a City Camp wherever I can find a local partner.
Please contact me directly ff you are interested in becoming a local
partner and are confident that you can handle the responsibility. Please
also share this with your other networks.
Thank You,
Kevin
Very exciting Kevin. We at E-Democracy.org will do whatever we can to help
build momentum for this tour.

Anyone else on this list in Australia? I'd love to help with a CityCamp
Melbourne (but would support any other Aussie city where there was
momentum).

*Puts hand up* count @FutureGov in for London. Great work Kevin. Have ideas of
who to link you into in other cities around Europe too (Barcelona in particular
but also possibly Amsterdam, Stockholm, Paris, Berlin...).
But London for certain for now!
I know I'm still interested in helping organize a CityCamp for
Birmingham, AL. I'm thinking it would be a great time to hold it too
with a guaranteed change in leadership coming soon (there are several
cities in Alabama that would benefit from it).
Cheers,

Great news!
1. Chicago: I'd love to see one in Chicago, and could help connect you
with Net Tuesday, Free Geek, and other local networks here that might
be of help.
2. Bombay: I know a couple of folks in Bombay (Mumbai) who might know
potential allies, though I don't know any directly.
3. Calcutta: I know a *lot* of folks in Calcutta (Kolkata), since I
grew up there. This is the kind of project I'd like to see there, and
am very motivated to find partners for.
4. Boulder: There's a great social venture incubator program I came
across while riding through Boulder a couple of weeks ago:
http://www.unreasonableinstitute.org/
-22 social entrepreneurs, and a very strong network of VCs, engineers,
developers, nonprofiteers, academics, and others interested in
changing the world in sustainable ways. They might be a good network
to tap into, and possibly interested in co-organizing something like
this.
Is there a central space for planning this kind of event? What's the
organizing process look like?
Thanks,
Dave.

Kevin,
Let's chat about Sacramento. I haven't seen much responsiveness from yet
CA's capitol, but I'm sure the community can be stirred to action.
Anybody citycampers in Northern CA?

@Kevin
A few of us in the Bay Area have started to explore the opportunities for an
OpenGov/Gov 2.0 event (conference/unconference/barcamp/hybrid) in the
not-too-distant future.
We only had a couple of conference calls so far and are early in the process.
Some of the key agreements so far: local/regional focus (greater SF Bay Area)
with potential topic threads/themes, key to get government workers/officials on
board (planning/attending)!
Meeting notes can be found here:
http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AX87ZzULwdR4ZHI2Yzk1NV85ZGZzYmsyZHA&hl=en&authkey=CIf0wckI
Our next call will be scheduled for sometime next week. We're still reaching
out to more people at this point. Let me know, and I'll keep you posted.
That last post was actually meant as a reply to Ryan.
Kevin is already in the loop. ;-)
For locals on this list, our Google group is here:

Excellent. Count OpenPlans in for helping to organize CityCamp NYC.

I'd be happy to help with New Zealand - I live in Auckland so that would be
easier for me. Anyone else in New Zealand on the list?
Carol
I'd be interested in working with folks in Canada - me, I'm in Ottawa, and I
just read in the Ottawa Citizen that the City of Ottawa is opening up its data.
- Randy
Count me in for London. Let me know how I can help.
Pete
I suggest we pick a specific CityCamp day across the Globe and let people
self-organize.
Like Mashable did using Meetup Everywhere - http://www.meetup.com/mashable/

Steve,
I've mulled this approach over with several folks and in my mind going back
to January. I'll leave it to others if they want to chime in here with
opinions.
My take is this: I like the idea of that type of event as part of an
overall strategy for CityCamp. I'm not capable of taking it in that
direction right now. My reasons are these: I'm not sure the event in
Chicago firmly established a pattern that others will follow in a way that
is easily recognizable as CityCamp. I'd like to experience a few more
before we try a global "launch." There are also scheduling conflicts with
local organizers and participants. There are cases where we can get
participation from high profile people (CIO, mayor) and/or a choice event
location (City Hall). Coordinating that schedule is not just inherently
difficult. Some of these localities have specific reasons for their timing,
example near elections and other local events. For the first two reasons, I
don't think it's a CityCamp if it doesn't have participation of local gov
and matter to local gov. Finally, I think there is some value in not
driving too quickly to connect each locality to a global event, but rather
plant the grassroots in many locations and help them grow. I liked that Joe
Germuska and others made sure that a fair part of CityCamp Chicago was for
people who are local to Chicago. Part of the Washington, D.C. event took
place outside, in the neighborhoods. I think events on this world tour will
be as much about each city as about all cities. It seems to be what people
want right now.
I think there are two ways to look at CityCamp. Both have validity to me.
One view is of people everywhere momentarily connecting through what they
have in common, Gov 2.0 at the local level. Another view is people in
specific places, with some things in common and some not, all looking for
means to connect Gov 2.0 to where they live on a long term basis.
I'm immediately focused on the latter. I'd like to see us get to the
former, perhaps by middle of next year.
I am concerned about cities being left out out of the mix. I'm concerned
about keeping the fire lit in Chicago. I don't want to inhibit a global
event (or even a local one). I'm open to discussion.
Hope I didn't ramble...
Thanks for all of your support and guidance.
Best,
Kevin

Aldon Hynes raised an idea on another forum today -
http://groups.dowire.org/r/post/67Vnm0egSjaII8L9dbKguO - (my very
global, general "e-democracy" interest space with 700+ folks) about "A
Perpetual Virtual CityCamp" - http://www.orient-lodge.com/node/4175
I tend to agree with Kevin, there is an advantage to a staged,
momentum building approach for physical gathering ...
However, I could imagine building up to a virtual week or something
that happened everywhere at the same time - imagine 2,000 people who
participated around the world in 15 CityCamps and another 2,000 people
who couldn't attend one online mixing it up with some intent and
structure.
The cost to coordinate and promote such an event well might be high,
but here is an outline that could be adapted:
http://pages.e-democracy.org/Social_media_in_community_service - See
link for context/more
* Social Media and Public Life E-Conference/Webinars
o A one week online conference with real-time and
asynchronous sessions and keynotes using a hands-on mix of social
media reaching at least X,000 registered participants. There will be a
modest fee to register ($20?) which helps solidify commitment and
participation. However, scholarships will be available.
o Reusable post-conference output will include at least 30
on-demand webinars, fact sheets, etc. created by social media experts
o The e-conference tracks will be designed to attract a
diverse range of institutions and organizations hoping to use social
media in public life in order to strategically introduce opportunities
for supporting community service and voluntarism with social media
across public life.
o Additional funding to support complementary tracks (e.g.
Government 2.0) may be sought and would work to increase the exposure
of community service use of social media across public and community
institutions as well as allow those in community service to learn from
related sectors.
If someone wants to further develop this idea, let me know.
On the other hand, we can assume simply building the number of people
on the various CityCamp discussion points will also generate real
international exchange value of a more informal and less labor
intensive manner.
Cheers,
Steven Clift
Hi Kevin,
I was brought here by your mentioning St.Petersburg where I live now as one of
the cities of your interest and that actually made me start thinking seriously
of what we can do here and now, in St.Petersburg, Russia, in our specific
conditions when cooperation with local government is really hard to achieve.
I am going to reveal my considerations here in the next few days, probably
create a separate topic - as a reference point for all who may be interested,
including other local people who may help, whom I'll try to attract.
Meanwhile - may I ask - what especially attracted you in St.Petersburg, why did
you choose it? What do you expect of conducting CityCamp or the like here in
St.Petersburg?
This is the question to all the other people in the forum as well who feel an
interest in St.Petersburg. Thanks!
Sophy,
You attracted me to St. Petersburg! More fully, Dmitry Kachaev (Siberia,
Washington D.C.) told me he that he was aware of some folks in St.
Petersburg using the #citycamp hashtag. I think it was a friend or contact
of yours over there called my attention and CC'd you. Now we have
@CityCampSPb <http://twitter.com/CityCampSPb>. If there's a conference
happening we connect to it, even if just to report about it and include it
in the global conversation.
Best,
Kevin
