To mark the formal launch of this forum, we'd like to get your views on Jubilee
Pool and the proposed Hengrove Leisure complex.Do you use Jubilee? Would you
travel to Hengrove? How? Do we need small, local pools within walking distance
or centralised super-facilities?
All the best

I was shocked to find that Jubilee is closing in 2010. One of our 4 criteria in
choosing where to live in Bristol was that our house needed to be within
walking distance os a swiming pool.
We moved in 2004, the year that Michael Ellet assures me tha public
consultation was carried out. Otherwise we would not have chosen Brislington at
all.
I am also infromed by Michaela that if enough people use the new pool at
Hengrove, the demand will be suffiecient to build a new pool at Redcatch. This
decision will be made in 2013. I am not convinced that this is a good way to
judeg the demand, as my family will cease to take swimming lessons and cease to
swim weekly. So our needs will not be acknowlegded using this criteria.
Bristol is supposed to be the Green Capital of UK. So why are all local;
fascillities disappearing? We shall be forced into our cars to pollute our
childrens lungs on the way to exercsie. What nonsence!
Brislington is loosing all identity and the loss of Jubilee will only add to
this. Sainsbury's, Tesco's and the Bath Road are farily community unfreindly as
it is. We are loosing Sandy Park, there is very little to distinguish
Brislington from any other suburban-no-identity-type of place to dwell.
Residents are already greatly encouraged to go from house to car to house to
car without walking and greeting their neighbours and community.
What next the loss of the library?
Oh I know more housing! Yes we are going to build on our green space, one of
the few things left that make Brislington different to the urban areas.
We need to protect our local identity.
The loss of Jubilee is just one more nail in the coffin of Brislington. Sorry
perhaps my language is a tad inflammatory.
We will not take possibly 3 buses in order to continue very costly lessons,
which is a shame. The whole family greatly enjoy and value Jubilee. The
increase in cost and time will just not work for us.
I was very disapointed that the opportunity to air our views was missed. The
poorly photocopied leaflet giving the deadline of July was not visable until
August at Jubilee.
How delightful it was to find an affordable area near Templemeads, close to the
centre, with a swimming pool, library, good infants school, lots of green
space, local shops and houses with gardens!
What a shame Brilsingotn is loosing, among many other things, Jubilee.
People might be interested in this overview of the history of Hengrove and pool closures: http://www.bristol.gov.uk/item/committeecontent/?ref=sc&code=sc008&year=2008&month=07&day=14&hour=14&minute=00. Since SLM took over pool management, pool use across the city has risen by 16%. It would be great to see someone in this discussion take a lead on coordinating a plea to the City to keep Jubilee open. This would mean that the city needs to invest in equipment, but given the recent cosmetic refurbishment of Jubilee, this shouldn't be impossible. Is there anyone out there with the time to take this on? Angela Piccini
I visit the pool at least once a week and find it no worse or better that any
other pool that I have used regularly in Bristol over the years. No-one likes a
dirty pool, but I think this detracts slightly from the main issue. Although
its important to encourage more use, and cleanliness certainly helps The main
issue that stands out for me is that of closure.
I'd like to suggest people make complaints in writing (there are forms at the
pool) re cleanliness but do not use this as a reason to abandon a wonderful
local resource.
I am away Oct 4th but would like to be kept up to date please.
