ahead. This superb building has for many years been a pub and before that, a
private club. It is good to report that lorries arrived this week to return the
fixtures and fittings that had been removed when it closed. I understand the
place will re-open in April?
Following the closure of the Hollybush Inn at Bristol Hill, I guess it
underlined the fact that the British Pub was going to struggle in years to
come. Other pubs in the Brislington area have, understandably, found things
hard. The smoking ban hit hard in a lot of places, with extra expense to the
licensee providing external smoking facilities (where possible) and the loss of
heat in the winter with smoking customers forever in and out of the building
for a quick puff.
One other pub that was closed and re-opened is the Pilgrim Inn, neatly tucked
away in Hollywood Road. Following a fire and subsequent refurbishment, the pub
re-opened in October 2007. There have various problems since and Punch Taverns,
the owners put the lease on the market in 2008. This week a sign was erected
outside the premises advertising the Freehold for sale.
Many pubs in the Bristol area have been put on the market and ended up as
flats, as was the case with the nearby Hollybush. Is this the next one to go?
