I am currently working with a small cross party group of councillors looking at
the council's support for the future of the Post Office network and shopping
areas (see item 7 at
http://www.bristol.gov.uk/item/committeecontent/?ref=ta&code=ta000&year=2009&month=04&day=28&hour=18&minute=00).
To aid discussions we are trying to understand the impact of previous Post
Office closures on local residents and traders in three areas across the city,
including Broomhill Road in Brislington (where the Post Office closed in 2008).
I am planning to visit the area over the next couple of weeks to survey
shoppers and traders. I welcome any anecdotal comments you may have on this
issue.
Thank you

Broomhill suffers with poor transport links and amenities generally.
The No. 1 bus service is the only link to surrounding areas and does not go
near the nearest Post Office in Birchwood Road, St. Anne's.
There are many people in the older part of the St. Anne's area, more especially
the elderly, that miss the Post Office in Langton Court Road. I know it's a few
years since it closed, but due to the poor transport links in the area, it is
not a straightforward journey to a Post Office any more.
The No. 36 bus is infrequent, if not totally unreliable at times. Many bus
stops are without shelters, so the prospect of a bus trip in inclement weather
is not too appealing!
The only option for many elderly residents is to take to their cars, that's if
they have one. In our case, I guess the nearest "decent sized" branch is in
Sandy Park Road, but parking near the branch is difficult, especially if you
are advancing in years.
I know Bristol is meant to be the first Cycling City, but I don't think my
disabled 80+ year old neighbours are going to be able to take advantage of the
£22.8 Million of funding that's been made available for cycling?

Hi Pete and others interested in Broomhill. I run the community centre in
Allison Road (near Broomhill infant and junior school) and I would like to meet
other people who are interested in supporting Broomhill to build a greater
sense of community and to work together to get the services we need for this
area. If anyone is out there please get in contact - you can email me, Ali
Hender, at <email obscured>.
I would also like to float the idea of a Broomhill gathering of interested
people on 27th October 8pm. (Brislington Neighbourhood Centre are having our
AGM at the Good Intent on Tuesday 27th October at 6.30-7.45 so it could
naturally follow that). If others liked this idea of an informal discussion
and could help invite people we could inviting Broomhill local businesses,
organisations who contribute to the community such as schools and churches and
any residents who are interested in building a better community. I'm aware
that people have alot of valid complaints and I don't want to ignore those but
I feel it's time we started looking at the solutions and what we CAN do
together, that would be the theme to this proposed gathering of people who want
to make a difference.
Cheers, Ali
