their forum ... it explains why we occasionally have posts with some
"extra" characters ("&nbsp") sprinkled throughout.

Here's what I received from our tech guys:

After a quick search, I found the following.
        Question: On replying to email in yahoo, original message is
                          included with lots of &nbsp. How do I resolve
                        this?
        Answer: [1 hour ago]
                Many people are complaining about that. It started with
                the revised Classic mail and has something to do with
                replying to plain text in rich text or vice verse.
                Hopefully Yahoo will work it out. If it keeps occurring
                then try copying the original mail and pasting it into a
                new one.

comment.  I really don't want to start an off-topic thread but wanted
to give a heads-up to those who use Yahoo and to respond to those
who've sent me offline complaints/comments about those past e-mails
with this strange "formatting/code"
