SEEDY SUNDAY 2007
The Old Market, Upper Market Street, Hove
Sunday 4th February 2007
Sunday 4th February 2007 will see a flurry of seed swapping at the 6th
annual community seed swap at the Old Market in Hove. Seedy Sunday is an
exciting, inspiring event offering communities a practical way to revive
"outlawed" seeds to help support a vibrant, sustainable and healthy future
for diverse local food growing.
Seedy Sunday's reputation for being lively and full of surprises grows year
on year, with over 1,000 people taking part last year. You can swap seeds or
make a donation if you have no seeds to swap, buy seed potatoes, talk to
seed doctors, and be inspired by exhibitions, films and talks on the
importance of biodiversity.
Seedy Sunday is organised by a group of volunteers who also advise other
groups on how to organise their own community seed swaps, and there is a
rapidly growing number of seed swaps around the country.
Sponsored by Brighton-based Infinity Foods, Seedy Sunday brings together
gardeners, seed savers, farmers, herb and wild flower enthusiasts, local
gardening and community groups as well as organisations campaigning for
sustainable food production and biodiversity.
Event organiser Fran Saunders says "Locally diverse food production systems
are under threat and, with them, the accompanying local knowledge, culture
and skills. Heritage seeds (de-listed from mainstream seed catalogues and
prohibited from commercial sale) do still survive, and we need to protect
them for future generations. Seedy Sunday is a call to gardeners, consumers
and the whole community to take action!"
