Page 12 today of the local Argus (not yet on line in full) shows an interesting
juxtaposition:: along side the Death and RIP's, sandwiched between a
fluff-story about "Pub serves beautiful beer" pictured with a local MP, there
is a head-line "'Lone parent' lied to gain benefits" and "MP in flat sale
defends claims" and
The imbalance of the Press copy defies belief. One could almost say:
"It really is one law for the rich and another for the poor. There is no
defence of having inadvertently overclaimed benefits if you are unemployed. On
the contrary, you will be subject to the full force of the law, interviewed
under caution and as likely as not prosecuted. MPs are able to draw up rules
allowing them to get away with what many would see as expenses fraud, but the
poor are penalised for the slightest error."
This will run and run till the revolution takes place...

It's far more likely for someone in poverty to underclaim the benefits they
are entitled to rather than to 'inadvertently' overclaim. Probably most
cases of overclaim are where circumstances have changed, new partner, etc,
and the claimant doesn't informed the council or DWP. Serious fraud, claims
for lots of properties by a single claimant, etc, are rare.
i haven't heard of people overclaiming because they can't figure how much
rent they pay, or if they've got a job. Or whether they have 2 or 3 kids. If
anyone has trouble here contact the Citizen's Advice bureau, or the
Unemployment Centre.

"One could almost say ...." Well one did say just that!
But Roy wisely refrains from mentioning the name of the person who said it. The
consequences of doing so on this forum could be unpleasant, judging by recent
history.

Our local MPs come out of it very well - no excesses and Celia Barlow
does not have a second home in London and therefore no claims at all on
it.

yes, Celia comes out nicely ---- it reminds me when I worked on the Pier years

I don't think so!!!!
See has claimed £28K which looks illegal to me
"Hove MP Miss Barlow has made political capital out of the fact that last
year she claimed nothing last year in second home allowances, choosing to
get the train back from Westminster to her constituency instead. "
"But the Telegraph today reveals she took advantage of the system to make
extensive renovations to her Hove home and claim moving costs, including
stamp duty. The total paid out was more than £28,000. "

Removing a garden shed? There are people in Hove who don't even have a
garden shed to live in. There are others in serious housing difficulties.
There is overcrowding in many properties, in many council properties the
bathroom is the size of a cupboard with a tiny shower, that more often than
not is broken.
What amazes me is her failure to grasp how claiming for the shed would be
perceived by her constituents. The sense that it is simply 'not cricket'
as they say, poor form, etc, apart from the political implications or
whether she was or wasn't breaking any rules.
I get the sense that the 'grabbing what you can, when you can' culture that
dominated the economy under New Labour has now produced a Fiddle England
with such deep roots, that to pull them out will cause the entire
foundations to collapse.
