Very pleased that my request for a scrutiny process on street trees has
been agreed . Terms of reference not yet finalised by the Panel, but my
suggestion in my request was :
To clarify the situation with regard to street trees in Brighton & Hove
To identify the threats to street trees and problems .
To make recommendations for a policy framework with regard to the
future of street trees.
Unfortunately if one proposes a scrutiny panel on an issue - it is not
then possible to be part of the panel - However, I intend to give
evidence. If anyone wishes to give evidence about street trees - in the
light of the above ToR you could send it by writing (e-mail will do) to
Giles Rossington@brighton&hove.gov.uk . You can also ask to speak to
the panel if you wish and you will be timetabled in.
Many thanks for your observations.

Ooh frightening, What comprises "evidence"? Do they want an emailed
repeat of earlier info we sent you or does it need to be more
well-considered? Should it be wide-ranging or focus on single trees?

Any consideration of street trees must also consider the potential impact of
stopping the current Dutch Elm Disease Control Programme by the South Downs
Joint Committee which is strapped for cash. Officers have suggested that
cutting the programme might be an option but is one that would potentially have
huge ramifications for the elms in the city.

My own feeling is that since a lot of the trees which are being
neglected (tarmac up the trunk etc.) are elms, this initiative will
reduce the stress on such trees and enable them to better resist any
Dutch Elm Disease that comes their way. A bit like keeping fit in order
to suffer less colds.
