The City Council's top legislative agenda item is headed for victory: Central Corridor is part of the global budget agreement just announced at the Capitol, and is expected to pass the legislature today, and be signed by the Governor upon passage. House and Senate leadership and the Governor have agreed upon a budget resolution and a new bonding bill! $70 million in state funding for the Central Corridor light rail transit line is in the bonding bill, which keeps us on track for receiving nearly $500 million in federal funding and opening the line in 2014. The passage culminates the efforts of a broad coalition who signed a common resolution in support of passing Central Corridor during this legislative session - including the St. Paul City Council, the District Councils Collaborative (made up of representatives from all the impacted neighborhoods), and my own district council. (See full list of coalition members at http://tinyurl.com/5vhfaq) With it, we take another key step in addressing central-city economic development, climate change, transportation access and high gas prices. Work remains along the Central Corridor, but this is a key moment for transportation choice! A big thanks to DFL leaders, and my appreciation for your support in the end, Mr. Pawlenty. Bob,
I think a special thanks and apology to the Speaker is due as well. You
bashed her pretty hard in your previous message. As someone who worked
with her to pass the transportation bill earlier this session, I know how
personally invested she is in ensuring that our cities remain vibrant and
healthy.
