Hi Green Team and Bemmy Forum members,
You may know that in February and March three students from UWE undertook 6
week projects looking at aspects of East and North Streets. This was as part
of their Architecture/Planning course and part of our campaign to improve local
shopping places.
One of the reports will be available at Reception in the Southville Centre from
tomorrow. This deals with the east end of North Street from Cannon Street up
to North Street Green. I am expecting the other two reports shortly.
If you would like to see the report ask at Reception. Since it is the only
copy that we have, you will not be able to take it from the building.
It is also on disc and you will be able to take this home, for a while.
Also, on Thursday, 14 June (from 7.00pm) the three students will be presenting
their work for discussion by local people and officers from the police and BCC.
If you would like to come along, let me know.
Cheers, Ben.
Bins on North St
I was asked about this a while ago.
I drew a map of the bins on Norths St - yes, planet saving activity, if you
like.
Anyway, at the TF end of the road, I thought you could add a couple of bins,
one near the Tobacconist, one over the road, near the Deli. COntact with Steve
Sparks suggets it may be possible to get them (please note, this is short of a
promise).
Is it a good idea?
I know people have concerns about street furniture.
And are there other sites on North St which would benefit?
I posted earlier on via my email which has since decided to sit in the corner
and sulk...What I said was in reply to Charlie's post and that I wondered if we
could tie in the opinions on this subject from the forum members with the
findings of the next street audit on June 18th. We look at all aspects of the
street we audit including graffitti, pavements, street furniture etc and,
unless anybody objects, I see no reason why we shouldn't publish the inventory
on the forum.
Cecilia - I think thats a good idea. As well as looking at the Street Audit
findings it would be interesting to see what the UWE students who have been
doing some work on street furniture (existing and potential) along North
Street have to say. Perhaps a summary of their findings/recomendations can
be posted when available.
Having bins avaialble is important but it unfortunately it doesn't make
people use them. I'd be really keen to try a awareness raising campaign
before we put lots more bins around. What do others think of doing a short
poster campaign with the traders some time during the summer? If we did it
for a short period - say a month it could have more of an impact. If it
worlks we could run it again.
The North Street Traders 'North Street - near and good' (not sure if that's
the exact wording) stickers that the traders have put up are great. We could
try a 'North Street - keep it clean' poster campaign for a month, perhaps in
June and see whether it has any effect. I suspect that it will be a case of
repeating the message often that will have an impact but you have to start
somewhere.

Re Matthew's comments on North Street,
The reports of UWE students are available at reception in the Southville
Centre. We are planning an event on June 14 when the students will present
their findings for discussion. This will start at 7.00 (tbc). All
welcome.
Cheers, Ben.
Good idea , Cecilia. The forum would seem to be the ideal place..
