We are a non profit organization, and the State just cut our operating budget
by another 12%, so if you are interested in helping out in any way...like
through volunteerinng your time or anyin-kind donations you would wish to give,
we would greatly appreciate your help!
I'm afraid I can't help you on any of the safety issues when dealing with smoke
in the casinos...I am a domestic violence advocate...and our organization deals
specifically with domestic violence and abuse...so I really don't know anything
about themedical ramifications of second hand smoke, although I am sure it is a
problem that warrants further investigation.
I myself am a survivor of rape and severephysical and emotional violence at the
hands of my ex husband. Because of myown personal experience and the fact that
my healing process that had progressed greatly, I now train andeducate law
enforcement, ER nurses and personnelll, teachers, child care workers,
students...anyone who is interested in learning more about the prevention of
domestic abuse. I started two teen groups called SAVE (Students Against Violent
Environments) which are situated in twolocal high schools...and I am hoping to
continue offering that project to as many schools that will have me!
I would be very happy to meet with youif you would be interested in a short
training session on what it is we provide as an organization andwhat domestic
violence really is.
I hope this was helpful to you...and once again have a great weekend!!!

Why don't you explain to all of us the kind of work you do with those employed in the casino industry who come to you for help? The "real community" you speak of you know nothing about or you would explain why it is that Indian Reservations have 50% to 70% unemployment compared to the horrible 9% for the general population. You are right about me "hating." I hate this rotten capitalist system and the war, racism and exploitation it breeds. I have not made any of this a personal attack on anyone... I have addressed issues, problems and their solutions; apparently in a way you and several others despise because you know the solutions to these problems lie outside of where the foundations paying your salary will allow you to go... in fact, you are one of those who fear the solutions to these problems because solving these problems would put you out of a job. Now, why don't you demonstrate your professional honesty and integrity by describing what kinds of problems casino workers and their families are experiencing and what you do to help them solve their problems. Let's find out from a professional in the fieldfrom someone like yourself involved in "family safety" if these casino operations are providing the kind of healthy and safe work environment conducive to family values and raising families that the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association and Minnesota politicians pandering for campaign contributions claim this casinoindustry does. Now, keep in mind, I have talked with many law enforcement personel as well as many educators and those in the American Cancer Society and the heart and lung foundations as well as many professionals in the mental health field so it is going to be very difficult for you to come forward claiming you don't know about the problems or there aren't any problems. Now, come on, Ms. Lavalle, you entered this discussion with personal attacks on me for bringing these problems into public view; now, let us here from you the kinds of problems you are dealing with when working with casino workers and their families. You said, "where people work together toward solutions for healthier environments, a safer society forwomen and children...and the right to just enjoy being alive. It really can be more enjoyable empowering the good in people instead of trying to draw out the bad. Just a thought..." I have a final question: If, as you insinuate here you and so many others are doing all of this good work: Why do we still have so many problems... and, why are the problems getting so much worse? Unions like our Organizing Committees which come together based upon the common problems we share are working to solve these problems; and because grant money from foundations isn't constraining us, I can speak the truth and address very specific issues while your foundation funding and the need to kiss up to politicians constrains you... otherwise you would be telling us the specifics rather than hiding behind nice sounding platitudes which don't mean a darn thing. Alan L. Maki Director of Organizing, Midwest Casino Workers Organizing Council Quoting Kathryn Anne Lavelle : My work in the battered women's movementand with issues of cultural competency speaks for itself. Those who know me are aware of my integrity. I have no need to defend myself or the causes, so please don't waste your energy trying to draw me into your personal war. I'm pretty impervious to that sort of thing anyway :) I am so truly sorry for you...and it is my hope that you come out of the shadow of hatred...of yourself and the world around you...and learn to live in the light of real community, where people work together toward solutions for healthier environments, a safer society forwomen and children...and the right to just enjoy being alive. It really can be more enjoyable empowering the good in people instead of trying to draw out the bad. Just a thought... I hope you have a great weekend, the weather should be awesome! E-democracy is for people like Greg Paquin who want to accomplishsomething worthwhile with their time. If you're not the solution, then you have become the problem." I thought e-democracy was for everyone and here you are trying to dictate terms of use based upon your own narrow perspective without any caruing or consideration for the plight of casino workers forced to work in smokefilled casinos at poverty wages without any rights... injustices that you have never raised your voice in opposition to but now you try to lecture me about how to do my job. I suggest that you take an aspirin or two for your headache, take a little nap; and when you wake up you go out and take the time to look at the world as it is and what is going on rather than from your nice comfortable perch made possible by foundation grants. I would also point out that the center you work for has repeatedly refused to assist casino workers who have been the victims of violence and sexual abuse on and off the job. Nor does your center assist those who have lost their health as a result of working in smoke-filled casinos. And here you are trying to use e-democracy to sow divisions among people; I will be watching, as will others, to see what you do when it comes to ending racism in employment in northern Minnesota... why don't you tell everyone where your funding comes from? This might be a clue as to why you are attacking me even though the only thing I have done is brought forward problems that you are being paid to help people with; but, like the politicians I have named who refuse to address the problems of the people, you do exactly the same thing these politicians do... you talk a good talk but do absolutely nothing... if all of you who are so upset with the way I bring these problems forward and were actually doing the jobs you are being paid to do, I wouldn't have to be saying anything, would I? The only thing you specialize in is finding a way to ignore problems while claiming you are doing something. Like I say, I have had considerable experience with your outfit after bringing women in for help who have been abused by casino management personel only to have your outfit turn them away. Perhaps you would like to explain to this list what your Northwoods Coalition did when I brought in a young Hmong woman who had been arrested and taken to the Roseau County Jail by the Warroad Chief of Police because she had been beaten up by her boyfriend... a Blackjack pit boss at the Seven Clans Casino-Warroad owned by Red Lake Gaming Enterprises? The Warroad Chief of Police said he had no choice but to place her in jail because there was no adequate women's shelter in northern Minnesota. She suffered further abuse while locked up in the Roseau County jail, then again, when she was "kicked out of jail" and transferred to the psych ward at Thief River Falls... only to be medicated into a zombie state all the result of her being the victim of brutal abuse. And the Northwoods Coalition for Family Safety refused all help. I do not need to be lectured about what I write or how I write by someone like you. Come on, Ms. Lavalle, explain to the list why it is that northern Minnesota doesn't have a women's shelter where the victim of this kind of abuse can be helped rather than taken to jail. While the perpetrator has gone free. I would suggest, again, that there is something wrong with the politicians I have cited in not doing their jobs... and you and your organization have failed in your responsibility of being advocates for the kind of programs that are really needed... you have your nice cushy job complements of foundation grants and the heck with the problems of the rest of the people... other than jumping at the beck and call of the foundations who fund your programs when it comes to trying to sow divisions among people working for change... that is your real job, isn't it? Anyone can see how you hve taken a cheap shot here. I could take another shot and ask you how you have plugged into helping those you are now claiming you support since you obviously know the problems. Come on, Ms. Lavalle, explain to this list serve how racist discrimination in employment practices is related to perpetuating family violence. Those of you working off of foundation grants do everything in your power to downplay the role of racism in hiring practices in northern Minnesota... why is this? I will tell you why. Because the very foundations funding your program derive their money from those who have gotten rich beyond most of our wildest imaginations, largely as a result of racist employment practices. There is a reason why Indian Reservations are running unemployment figures from 50% to 70%, Ms. Lavelle... because northern Minnesota employers are racist... and top among these racist employers is the Indian Gaming Industry which uses Native Americans as their base for depressing wages. Native Americans get poverty wages for working in what are supposed to be their own casinos as John MacCarthy, a white man, lives in a two-million dollar home in a very exclusive upscale neighborhood on the outskirts of Bemidji which serves as the office of the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association... Mr, McCarthy gets rich for peddling lies about all the good things casinos are doing for Native Americans--- lies that you believe. By the way, in addition to the usual foundations where your grant money comes from, how much money does the Northwoods Coalition for Family Safety get from the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association and these casino operations? Please be so kind as to forward me a list of your organizations funding sources as you are required to do by law upon request. Alan L. Alan L.
